Hi all...

On the scrounge for help or suggestions.

I am researching the Docherty side of my family and I have now got stuck. I have sourced details on my Great Grandfather but cannot get further and don't know where to go next.

GGF: James Docherty. No DOB. Married Elizabeth Grahames on 1st July 1912, the died 9th Oct 1914 Nr Frelinghien, France (KIA).

I have got his parents names from the marriage certificate of Thomas Docherty (Occ: Puddler) and Mary Costella/Costello (the writing was a bit tough) and know she was marked as Deceased by the marriage of James above in 1912.

Have checked for Birth certs, Death certs, marriages and came up with zilch? Any suggestions on what I could try next?

I have James Dochertys army number etc, is it worth getting his army records, would they contain DOB, parental information? I know James lived at 10E Hutton ST, Coatbridge and Elizabeth was at 26 Lefroy St, Coatbridge according to there marriage certificate. I also know before enlisting James was a coal miner at the Rosehall Colliery

[note; There are marks over both Thomas Dochertys' ages, so very hard to make out.]

Mary Docherty (m.s. Costello) died 10th December 1894 in Coatbridge, aged 38. She was the daughter of James Costello, puddler (deceased) and Bridget Costello m.s. Keenan (deceased).

A re-marriage for Thomas between then and 1901. Certificate should be available to view on SP and will give parents' names.

Just adding to all the good info found and confirmed by Hume. This looks a possible entry for the Dochertys in 1881:

Can't see any service papers unfortunately on Ancestry's database but these look to be his death details:

James Docherty, birth and place of residence: Coatbridge, died on 19 OCT 1914. A private in the
Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, the Duke of Albany's), 2nd Battalion - No. 8139.

Can't see any further details for him on www.cwgc.org

Hi Stovie and Monica,

Monica has found a great 1881 census entry, which I think confirms the marriage etc to be the correct family.

I first looked for a death for James' mum, Mary. Scottish females are indexed under both maiden and married names (if known) and therefore are a lot easier to find on the SP index. Once I had that, I went to the 1891 census and worked forward.

I used SP (for the certificate and original images) but the Ancestry index for finding the census. It's a lot better than the SP index in quite a few respects (you are able to add parents' names, birthplace etc). Unfortunately the transcription isn't as good so it's a case of working between the two.
