Suffragettes in Manchester - Sarah Ellen COOKE

Sarah Ellen Cooke was born SE Windeatt, 1857, in Exeter.  She married (1) Sydney Robinson in Salford, 1901, then (2) John Cooke (station master at Longsight) in Longsight 1905.

In the 1911 census form her details have been recorded, and then crossed out, but still legible.  I have searched to see if I can find her recorded anywhere else in 1911 without success.

In 1881 she was censuses as an attendant in a mental asylum - but if she was working overnight again in 1911 she should be recorded at the relevant institution (possibly Manchester Royal Asylum).

I wonder if she was one of the 'objectors' who refused to be recorded because they were not entitled to vote?

Are there records of the names of women taking part in the suffragette movement in Manchester - and if so, would it be possible to see if she was a 'signed up' member?

Hi,

This website does list British suffragettes, if you click onto the name it gives an biography of the lady.  Some are from Manchester but there is no Sarah Ellen Cooke or Sarah Ellen Robinson  or Sarah Ellen Windeatt.

Very interesting site!!  It does say at the bottom of the page that the list is incomplete and to contact to add to it!!

There must be a library or museum somewhere that could tell you more?  Will keep searching the net and if I can find anything  - will add to post if I do!!

There was once the Pankhurst centre on Nelson St, the site of the Pankhurst's home in Manchester. Is that still around?

Also I should think that now the People's History museum is reopening, they would be a good place to contact

How brilliant you are!!      There she was hiding in Erdington all the time! 

I don't know how you found her - she doesn't come up in the 1911 census search, and her surname is mis-spelt!   She seems to have been having a bit of a family get-together. 

I am only disappointed that she didn't turn out to be a suffragette after all.  It would have been so much more exciting than just visiting family.

Anyway -  thanks to all who posted the suffragette information.  It was interesting to learn about this movement, even if it was not immediately relevant to my search.

Thank you Milly very much from me too (interested in all WINDEATTs).

You might be interested to know that despite his then current position as "Registrar Births and Deaths" . . .  Henry WINDEATT (the brother) had lied on his own marriage certificate!!!

He claimed to be 21 when he was only 20 (doubtless desperate to get married although under age).

I dunno - the lies people tell on certificates!  I've found quite a few . . .
