The Cliff, Laxey

Well I have tried many searches and I think Rachael and son Harry were hiding somewhere.  Had a look around to see if they went out of the country for any reason and cannot see anything there.

My father did tell me he went abroad to school as he spoke fluent french but have drawn a blank with that search as haven't been able to find a boarding school in france or belguim with english pupils for the period before the 1st WW

Did the address come from the divorce papers.  I just wondered if we can follow up any other addresses  from the paperwork.

I think she hid from the enumerator though.

Yes I photocopied some of the divorce papers when I went to Kew, thats where I got the address The Cliffs, Laxey from, and 19 Oxton Rd

The only other addresses are for set days where she committed adultery in Jun and July, they appear to be a hotel- The Woolton Hall Hydro, Woolton Liverpool and the Sunnyside Hydro, Promenade Extension, Southport.

Just found a reference for planning permission (modern) to The Cliffs Fairy Cottage, Laxey.
 
In 1901 the address is Near Penfold, Fairy Cottage, Lonan, Laxey and the occupant is a 'Boarding House Keeper'. 

Do you think this could be what it is, was she staying in a Boarding House - if it is still there in 1911.


There are Cliff Cottages etc in LONAN as opposed to LAXEY

ADDING - I have found Cliffe Laxey, actually in Lonan - and it is a boarding house occupied by Sarah Jane Cornish, but no Rachel.

It really is a mystery, how could people evade the census, as both her parents were no longer alive and her only relative was her sister Anna Marie Sherratt and Rachel doesn't appear in their return.

Unless she was abroad visiting Harry at School

the address is almost certainly Dumbell terrace (known at that time as Ham & Egg terrace due to number of people who provided for the tourists) - originally a long row of terraced cottages built in 1850's by Mr Dumbel for the Laxey Miners working for his company - leads up to the great Laxey wheel (look up on http://www.manxnotebook.com/gazateer/nlaxey.htm - it can be seen top left on plan

There was a Cliff cottage on shore road in Laxey - this was steeply decending road into old village - by 1911 the mining industry was dying and tourism was a major summer industry

I have just been having a look at these addresses as I am looking at buying a property in the vicinity.  The Cliffs was a boarding house at the top of Old Laxey Hill near Fairy Cottage.  Blundels Terrace doesn't seem to be Dumbells Terrace, as in the census return for 1911 it is grouped with other properties around Fairy Cottage - Dumbells Terrace is a mile or so away.  I think it may have been the houses being built around Fairy Cottage at the time - a Martha Blundell is running another (then recently built) boarding house, Stroanville, which is on the cliffs just below Fairy Cottage, so the Blundells may have been building other properties there which were temporarily called Blundels Terrace?
