Ireland to Durham, 1840s Grady, Carroll, Cluskey, Purcell
« on: Friday 05 March 10 03:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello --

I'm new here and have been slowly gathering information about my gg grandparents' families. I know that Patrick and Elizabeth (Purcell) O'Grady moved to Bishop Auckland, Durham sometime after my gg grandfather Michael Joseph O'Grady was b. (1844 +/-). Several more children were born -- Martin, Thomas, John, Patrick, Mary or Elizabeth. Michael and his father worked in the coal mines.

Michael married Margaret (Mc)Closky/Clusky, b. Ireland 1845, daughter of Patrick (Mc)Closky and Ellen Carroll (Mc)Closky. They arrived in Durham (Thornley, Easington, Bishop Auckland) sometime after 1845. I've found them on the censuses. Patrick was also working in the colliery.

Michael and Margaret married in abt. 1867 or 1868, emigrated to the United States (Pennsylvania).

Margaret's mother, Ellen, died 8th March?, 1877, Hamsterly, White Lea, Crook, and was buried Catholic Church of Our Lady Immaculate and St Cuthbert, Crook May 8? I have a death certificate for a Patrick Closky ( died at age 45,Bishop Auckland, 17 January 1889, Church Hill Helmington Row) and think it may be Ellen's son, but unsure.

This is the extent of my knowledge of this family. I would like very much to find out the names of Patrick/Eliz O'Grady's parents and Patrick/Ellen Cluskey's parents, and where they came from in Ireland. My grandmother always said "Cork", but Michael's obituary says Kerry.

Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this, I very much appreciate any clues or suggestions!
