cunningham lookup
« on: Wednesday 13 January 10 11:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello all. I am Jim Forster in Canada and I am researching my grandmothers family the Cunninghams. Thomas also known as Francis and his brother Timothy immigrated to Renfrew Ontario Canada about 1850. There are no references to any specific area in Ireland on any databases over here however using their dates of birth and fathers name I have narrowed down to Tipperary. Does anyone have access to the Bru Boru records. I don't have a subscription there and would appreciate a lookup.

Timothy born 1833 and Francis born 1837. Father = Thomas

Many thanks in advance.  Jim

The Bru Boru Heritage Centre is part of the Irish Family History Foundation and their data is available on their website. The system is pay-per-view (for each cert) only, and I dont know of any subscription options.

I am a little puzzled as to how you narrowed down his place of birth using just his father's name and approx year of birth - did you attempt to use the IFHF index to do this ?

Yes that's exactly what I did and then by clicking on the search by parish link at the right of the search result it takes you to the bru boro site. I then did the same search clicking on each of the parishes untill it found the same result. Both Tim and Francis were recorded at St Marys Clonmel (rc).
Yes it is pay per view. My mistake when I sais a subscription. The recession here has made a mess of things and so my credit cards are a little overdrawn so I have no access to buy credits on the site. I was hoping someone would have another way to access the records at no cost so I could confirm or not that I am on the right track. Jim

there could be a couple of problems using that method to search, as there is a possibility of a false match due to an incomplete search

1. Not all counties are included in IFHF database (e.g. Offaly, Cork City, Wexford etc etc)

2. Not all available parish records have been transcribed by the IFHF

3. Some parish records for this timeframe have not survived

Cunningham is quite a common surname and was widespread throughout Ireland - top 10 counties based on an analysis of Griffiths valuation :

 1.      Down      360 *
 2.      Galway      163
 3.      Cork      154
 4.      Antrim      129
 5.      Roscommon      129
 6.      Tyrone      111
 7.      Louth      109
 8.      Armagh      105
 9.      Monaghan      95
10.      Westmeath      93

 (* number of households)

that said with two names with matching father's name, it's probably worth following your Tipperary line of investigation a little further, but I think further evidence would be needed to be certain you have the correct people..

Thanks for that. My only other lead is that Thomas is supposed to be married to Johanna Delaney, however using the same search methods I have come up blank. I have done a search at the LDS site and there is a reference to them but no marriage date or place.

Thanks to anyone who took an interest in my earlier posting.
Finally was able to access the pay per view records. Mothers name on both boys was Joan and Johanna Connors. Although this does not match the name I had on referance here in Canada for a marriage which gave mothers name as Johanna Delaney that dos not mean that the actual birth mother is correct and perhaps she died and a remarriage occured and the lad gave that name as mother.
Ah the joys of genalogy, so much to do, so little time.

Hi
I am also related to the Cunninghams in Tipperary - mostly (as far as I know) in Carrick on Suir. What other Cunninghams do you know of?
Regards
Paul

I am at a dead end for now. My only info is as stated in my previous posting. I ommited to mention that the two births occured in St Marys Clonmel. My backtracking efforts here in Canada have also turned up nothing to prove which county they came from so this is all just speculative for the moment.
