Last one I checked in the book - typical. ;D I thought we weren't going to be lucky here!

Numbered stone 161 in Whittinghame (in the East Lothian Hillfoot Villages MI booklet - available here: http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/Lothians_MI.html).

"by Jas BROUN in memory of wife Margt GOODALE 26.12.1838 [aged] 62. Above Jas BROUN 14.10.1850 [aged] 76."

This might be James in the 1841 census:

Address: Whittingham Mains, Whittinghame, Haddingtonshire
James Brown, m, 66, ag. lab., b. in county
James Laurie, m, 5, -, b. in county

Hello:

I was excited to see this posting on my first visit to rootschat. I'm a great-great-great granddaughter of James and Margaret Broun. Attached is a photo of the aforementioned tombstone. I took the picture on my one and only visit (so far) to Scotland in 1996.

I'm descended from their daughter Margaret, who married James Lawrie 22 Jun 1831 in Whittinghame. She died 17 May 1879 in Barberfield, Haddington.

The complete (I think) list of James and Margaret Lawrie's children are:
Margaret Lawrie (1830) Illegitimate daughter of James Lawrie and Alison Hay, but apparently raised by James and Margaret Lawrie, not Alison
Peter Lawrie (1833-1925)
James Lawrie (1835)
Agnes Lawrie (1838)
John Lawrie (1841)
William Lawrie (1844-1923) My great grandfather, emigrated to Canada and finally settled in Wisconsin, USA. Only member of the family to emigrate.
Jane Lawrie (1849)
Euphemia Lawrie (c 1852)
Adam Lawrie (1857)

Thanks for the information on James and Margaret Broun's children - I didn't have that information!

June

I just noticed the other requests from the first post.

The church where the Brouns are buried (and Margaret baptized in 1812) is Presbyterian. There's a plaque inside the church listing all the ministers of the church back to the Reformation.

From the Old Parochial Records of Whittinghame:

"22 June 1831 This day James Laurie in the parish of Garvald and Margaret Brown in this parish gave in their names for Proclamation in order to marriage and were married accordingly."

From the Births, Marriages and Deaths of Haddington:

"On 17th of May 1879 at Barberfield, Haddington, Margaret Lawrie, died aged 66; married to James Lawrie, farmer, and the daughter of James Brown, farm servant, and Margaret Goodall, both deceased. Informant: James Lawrie, widower."
