Spare Husband
« on: Wednesday 03 March 10 12:31 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any ideas what would have happened to a husband surplus to requirements in the 1880s????

My great great grandmother 'Susan/Susannah McGlave' had a son in 1886 called John McGlave with no father listed on his birth certificate however she seems also to have been married in 1883 to a Samuel Morris in Heworth. I don't have a copy of the certificate but she has an uncommon name and on the IGI records her fathers name of James is given so I'm positive its her.

Just wondered what she might have done with Samuel as I couldn't find a death for him and she then got married again in 1889.
Was it possible just to lie and get married again if husband number one was still alive or would the patio have been an option?

Hi Alison!

I found the death of a Samuel Morris, born about 1856, in Gateshead registration district in Q2 of 1887.  Perhaps Susan and Samuel parted company not long after their marriage and she reverted to her maiden name and then used that to register the birth of her son.  By 1889 she would be free to marry again.  Patio not necessary!

Hope I have found the right Samuel Morris!

Good luck in your hunt!

Oooh thankyou!
Samuel Morris doesn't seem to have been a particularly common name so I'm guessing that is him!

She can't have been too upset as she quickly found another man to father her child. Unless it was him but she didn't want to register him as the father!

The plot thickens!
