Newbie - needs help please. Garbutt/ Hindson
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 15:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me. I am looking for information on the parents of William Garbutt. William Garbutt married Mary Hindson on the 6th September 1857. On their marriage certificate it says His Fathers name is also William but now I have come to a blank. The family seem to come from the area of Stokesley.
William and Mary are my Gt, Gt,Grandparents.

Any help will be so welcome
Thank you

The first thing is to lay out all the information you have:

1857: what was the occupation of William and his father William, the age of William, his address, the witness names?
What censuses do you have the family on?
If you don't have any census records for them, when and where were their children born?
Did this family stay in the UK or emigrate?

There is someone here related to the same family. I see from here that Mary is b. 1837 Carlton.

From this I can see them in the censuses:
1881: William aged 53, b. Bisdale
1871: William aged 43, b. Bisdale
1861: William aged 33, b. Bisdale
(pretty obviously them as they have a son called Hindson).

www.familysearch.org shows a quite likely record in Bilsdale Midcable in 1828 for William son of William Garbut and Elizabeth; in 1841 this family are in the census and William senior, like your William in later censuses, is a stonemason. However the surname seems reasonably common in the area so it's worth being a wee bit cautious as you move back.

Hi Hawaai,

I have the 1841 and 1851 census for William Garbutt (b. 1796 Bilsdale). He was a stonemason in and around Bilsdale is whole life. He married Elizabeth (b. 1796 Carlton) and had two sons (George b.1821 and William b.1828) and two daughters (Ann b.1831 and Betsey b.1835).

William and Mary, your great great grandparents lived in and around Carlton, Yorkshire. I have their census records for 1851, 1871 and 1881. Happy to send on to you. William too was a stonemason.

They had eight children of which Hindson was their second, your great grandfather. Hindson's two sons, Harry and William, both went off to fight in WW1. I have got their war diaries if you are interested. Harry died within weeks of being in Flanders but William survived two years of war and returned after the Armistice. I would love to know more about him, if possible. Do you have any information on him? He married Ethel Miller. Some of his WW1 escapades make for incredible reading. Was obviously a brave man.

I have investigated because Hindson is my Great Great Grandfather!

Let me know,

Best wishes, Rob

I got really excited when I saw the name Garbutt but alas mine are from Northumberland and not from Yorkshire.  It seems the name George and William were a favourite name with the Garbutts as I have a lot of them myself.

Good luck in your research

I always thought Garbutt an unusual and uncommon name but it seems to be very popular, especially in the North of England.

If you find any defectors to Northumberland / Durham area let me know and I will see if they are in my clan.

Good hunting
