Townsends of Dublin 1800s?
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 12:36 GMT (UK) »
I have been researching my family tree for a while and on saturday had a major break through due to a wedding certificate being unearthed :)

my 4 x gr grandfather was:
Samuel Townsend

Born abt 1804
in Dublin, Ireland

 Died Mar 1872
in Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands, United Kingdom

I have him on the England census for 1941.

I really want to find out who his family were and where abouts he was from in Dublin etc...How would i go about this? I am new to Irish research as he is the first irish person i have come across so far in my tree.

Does the 1831 census exist?

Any help would be very much appreciated :)

1901 is the earliest full census to survive. Heads of Household for Dublin 1851 and scraps of earlier censuses are available.

Try this site for Dublin BMD's. It's not complete yet but they are working on it.

What profession did he have in 1841? There might be a mention in one of the trade directories from his time in Dublin.

Good luck.

Dara.

The only Samuel Townsend I can find in Pigot's 1824 and voting registers of 1832/39 is in Cork.. none in Dublin

Maybe someone else can find him in Dublin

There was a Townsend in Dublin in the late 18th century, as I recall coming across the name recently in connection with a legal matter. I'll check it out.
