I have a paternal relative John Lindsay, born Ruthven, Forfarshire 12 Sep 1821 a son of David Lindsay the Parish Schoolmaster and his wife Anna Mill, in my tree.  (David and Anna's daughter Jannet is my family link.)

I have it that he married Euphemia Milne on 15 Dec 1847 and have them both in the 1861 Census residing at Shandford Cottar House, Ruthven, Forfarshire with three daughters and a son and in the 1881 Census residing at West Herdhill, Kirriemuir, Forfarshire with one daughter and the son, but can't find them in the 1851 or 1871 Census

Anyone able to help?

Sometimes it's best to post the names of the children - especially if they are unusual (e.g. Cecilia)

I see that the IGI have the following born to the couple - search done 1840 to 1880.

Cecilia Lindsay - born 23 Sep 1855, Forfar, Angus - 'extracted'
Mary Ann Lindsay b.  31 Mar 1858, Rescobie, Angus
John Lindsay b.  28 Apr 1861, Fern, Angus.

Sorry, but can't see them on Freecen.

Hi Steve ... sorry for not including the bairns as well.  You are right though, it does help sometimes

I've got these three and also another one for them closer to their marriage in 1847 ... Hellen born abt 1849 in the Parish of Mains and Strathmartine, Forfarshire (A* gave some weird concoction in their transcription of the Parish name) and there could be more but I'll need to do some more work on SP to see if I can find them.

That aside, there's still no trace of them in the Census either side of 1861

Just a thought  I think this is young Helen born c. 1849 with her mother's family for 1851:

For what it's worth I have a very tatty undated copy of "The Complete Poetical Works of Burns" in which someone has written:

Linross
Airlie

I see that Linross seems to be a steading very close indeed to Lindertis. There is what appears to be a later name added, Jessie Milne, in a young hand and giving a Glasgow address.  The book was found in my grandfather's Glasgow home after he died. He was a Lindsay, born near Abernyte. Not probably of any interest but I thought I should at least mention it.

Apologies for the slow response but I had a day out in the hills today ... given the promising forecast and the brightness of the morning!  (See my attachment)

Your 'discovery' is interesting but the A* Census for 1861 gives Hellen's place of birth as 'Mains & Strathmartine, Forfarshire'.  With local knowledge, Mains & Strathmartine isn't a kick in the backside out of Dundee so it is just possible that this is her - and Dundee is easier to remember and write down!  I don't have parents for Euphemia yet but the Milne/Lindsay connection seems to be the proof of the pudding - so to speak!

Fascinating!  I just love old books and the stories they can tell outwith their content that come to light through posts!  Seems as if this could be 'family'.  The Lindsay family connect into my father's line through a Neilson/Lindsay marriage as you'll see from my first post (above)
