Little London, Leeds

Can anyone tell me why this area is known as Little London?

Have done some research online but cannot find any answers. Reason I ask is that my London ancestors (leather dresser and family) suddenly moved from Bermondsey in mid 1850s to settle in Leeds and I wondered if this was part of a larger move of Londoners north - maybe prompted by lack of work in London and new opportunities in Leeds? Or maybe not.......

Would appreciate any insights!

I understand it got the name Little London when in the late 1700's many people moved from London because of the industrial revolution.  Also the area around Elland Road football club used to be known as Islington.

Write to the Nostalgia section of the Wharfe Valley Times. I think they may have covered Little London in the past.

I have always known of Little London as being the Lovell Park Road / Oatland Lane / Servia Hill area, where Lttle London Community Centre still exists.

If you enter 'Little London, Leeds' as a search term in Google Maps it will show you the general area.

There are three other websites you may enjoy visiting:

This is a collection of old photographs with a searchable database.  Enter 'Little London' in the 'Terms' field for a collection of photographs of old properties in the Little London area.

This is the Leeds Tithe Maps project.  A split-screen gives you a modern map at one side and the corresponding tithe map at the other, complete with the names of tenants  and land owners throughout Leeds.

And thanks Pete for the Leodis hint. I actually had discovered this sometime ago - what a tremendous resource - have discovered photos of the actual houses that my Bennett ancestors actually lived in!
