Burial record - seem to have hit brick wall
« on: Saturday 27 February 10 17:45 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for the burial place of a World War I casualty - a Munitions Worker.   She does not fulfil necesary criteria to be in CWGC data base.  It is different for some other countries Muntions Workers, but that is the rule in the UK.  This means her burial place is not recorded by them.  According to the Acton Gazette of 10 May 1918, her funeral was held at All Saints' Church in Acton in May 1918 and then she was buried in Willesden New Cemetery.  The report mentions that her work mates from the factory filed past her open grave.

However Brent council (Willesden New) tell me there is no record of her in any of their cemeteries, Ealing Council (where All Saints' is situated) tell me the same.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I do now?  I am working with a group to commemorate serving women casualties of WWI and I do so much want to locate the grave of this 16 year old girl who died as a result of burns in her work at the Munitons Factory.

How best can I find her grave?   Who else can I contact? Many thanks

You might try posting on the Great War Forum with this query, as there is a member there (Jim Strawbridge) who is working on an ambitious project on the women who served and died in WWI.  He is collecting images of their graves and memorials and may well have some knowledge of this lady.

oops - just checked in there on Jim's latest posts and it looks like you are in contact already?!

Many thanks for your replies so far.  Yes I am helping Jim with a bit of research around my area.  But I have become so interested myself and I want so much to find her resting place and go there.  I've written back to Brent Council telling them about the Acton Gazette report of the funeral being at Willesden New, but I haven't heard back yet.  I should really wait a few more days I suppose.

Good luck, I do hope you're successful.  She will in any case have her memorial in Jim's magnum opus (I've taken a few snaps for him too!)  I gather he actually has a picture of Dorothy herself, which is marvellous.

Hi

Hi, yes I have now told Brent council about the report in the Acton Gazette of 10 May 1918, reporting that her funeral took place at Willesden New cemetery.  However, they have checked twice now and there is no record of her burial at Willesden New cemetery or in any of their cemeteries.   There is also no record in any of the Ealing cemeteries.   So I have no idea now whom to contact and would appreciate any ideas.  Many thanks.

Could there be a typo in the article and she's at Paddington New Cemetery?

or Gunnersbury, it's very close to the church.

Many thanks for your suggestions - I really do think there has been a mistake in the reporting in the Acton Gazette.  Brent council have searched a couple of times for me - and in all their cemeteries - including Paddington.  Ealing  has also but ... and I am really hoping this is the key ... I had not taken into account that Gunnersbury does not come under Ealing council so that hasn't been searched yet.  So I will be right on to that one tomorrow.   It's great to feel there is another lead to follow so thanks again
