Charnwood Forest Railway
« on: Saturday 27 February 10 17:12 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any old photos of the station buildings on Derby Road? This is for nostalgia only, as I can remember the goods wagons still using the site when I was at Rosebery school. (Goods line didn't close till 1963)

Hi John, i am pretty sure the library can oblige probably within their series of books of photos of old L'boro but also maybe in the collection of local photos in the cabinets upstairs (locked -ask librarian). I do remember having seen a photo at some time.

my hubby actually lived in the end house on Station street before we married.

John,

Sorry to hi-jack your post but I would also be very interested to see any photographs. My g grandfather was a train driver there. I can't remember the station myself although as a fellow former pupil of Rosebery I remember that well.

Was it Mr Preston in your time?

Thanks Diddy - not managed to get in to library as have been working! (I know - me working!)
Brie - yes it was Pop Preston. My mother socialised with him in later years, but purely as acquaintance! Vera Savage was my favourite - treated all as little adults. Have many memories of my times there, maybe you can join Didddy & me when we finally get to go for lunch one day! and we can reminisce. What year were you at Rosebery?

Hi John,

I remember Mrs Savage, she taught my sister. I had Mr Middleton and some younger teachers. I was there in the late 60s, early 70s. Before that I was at the same schools as Diddy, in her brother's year.

Thanks for looking Diddy, will keep my fingers crossed.

Afraid I was there late 50's, left in 63. In the days of corporal punishment - can remember the gathering outside Pop Preston's office after assembly, for the cane! Needless to say, I never waited there! But did get the slipper (well, plimsoll) once.
Don't know what they'll do with the building now - would be a shame to see it demolished! Drove past the other day and all the memories (good & bad) came flooding back. Must be an age thing!

back to the railway you two!!

L'boro library has:

Archive room: Photos in cabinet 2/drawer 4/P1

also ref book: A history of the Charnwood Forest Railway by M Helsey. 385-09425
this contains history /maps/diagrams/ photos (Pcs only though -some of these in above originals)
to be found on back wall as you go in -straight ahead.

also main libray to borrow:
Leicestershire stations by Andrew Moore. 385-314
pg 140 -147 CFRailway
to be found downstairs in local studies book area - turn right as you enter library and go to end of wall on your right.

That should keep you busy!!
