Hello winston
Thank you for your help. You can take the credit for finding that website, excellent piece of work. How on Earth did you do it, please tell.

I did not know about the Shufflebotham/Showbotham connection either.

A new twist tonight, at some time the name of Marson was at risk of dying out, no male heir I suppose. So it was double barrelled to "Marson-Shotton" to keep it alive.

Thank you to Luzzu also for the Service and medal record information

Forever in your debt
Rich

State of play,

Today I bought myself the "Dummies, Researching your family history online" and "Family history on the net" by Colin Waters, Countryside books. (Other genealogy books are available). I have also started putting all the names in some sort of order on a very rough family tree, to enable us to physically see who everyone is related to. As for being addicted? Not really, I only think about all this while I am awake.

Hi Ricky

the marriage below that Gortonboy found first is the link you were after to some extent.

Quote
possible shoebotham / marson link

Marriages Mar 1881

Marson  John    Cheadle  6b 345
SHOEBOTHAM  Eliza     Cheadle  6b 345
SHOEBOTHAM  Martha     Cheadle  6b 345
SILLITO  George     Cheadle  6b 345

Since I sent you the Pm earlier today stating that I have found Benjamin J Shotton's marriage mistranscribed as Sholton to one Edna Mary Marson I have taken a look at the image and it does say SHOLTON so somewhere along the way somone misheard heard him.

I have found Ben's wife in the census prior to marriage and her parents turn out to be John and Eliza from the marriage above.

Hi Wendy,

Thanks, that confirms what I thought. I am slowly getting the hang of piecing together the info. on that site.

One of Benjamin John's war stories passed down by word of mouth with absolutely no embellishment what so ever ::) He and his comrades were tasked to move the heavy artillery forward during the night ready for the next days fighting. It happened to be the eve of a religious festival for the enemy fighters. At dawn 4000 of the enemy surrendered without a shot being fired, they thought the noise during the night was a sign of anger from the heavens, at them fighting on a Holy day.
