Cumbers & other family links
« on: Thursday 13 May 04 23:58 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I am concentrating on the Cumbers side of the family at present. My Cumbers are mostly in Brentwood, South Weald and some links to Romford. I should have an update of all that I have found so far, in the next few days on my site.
This is quite an easy family to research (in the 1800s), but I am sure that there is lots of info available that I have not spotted that you may have to share. All I find is available for all to share, and any feedback or additional info is always welcome (a bit like this site!).
I am getting a bit lost about the Cumbers just prior to 1800, there seem to be a lot of births that I cannot link to later happenings. Did large parts of the family just 'get up and go' to the new world , or wherever? any hints welcome.
        Best
Kevan

Hi: I've seen this name appear a lot in Romford and also in nearby Dagenham, Hornchurch and Upminster. I have also seen it spelt Combers

Hi,
Thanks, yes I have seen that name occassionally too. What I am doing is working through all the available info I have on census and some IGI, and then hit the exact areas at the Essex Record Office, as and when I can get there.
But, any snippets of info from any source are all invaluable.
Thanks

To try and break through a number of brick walls of my own, I'm doing a systematic search of transcripts of quite a large number of Essex marriage registers for 5 different names. If I notice any Cumbers etc I'll let you know here

Hi,
Did you, and others know, that a latge number of the marriages are already transcribed at the ERO, very useful, they are books of typed transcripts; and always my first place I start searching.
I have spent the day gardening, reading an excellent book on Samuel Pepys, playing monopoly. and then a first screening of the latest Lord of the Rings, and still no surnames recognised from my tree!
Thanks for the feedback, what names are you researching? I have quite  a lot of my own private resources available, on top of the stuff I post on my site.
Best

Hi Kevan,

I have just been browsing your web site mainly because I have family connections in South Weald, namely the King family and I see you have a Mary Ann King  who married a William Cumbers in 1843, Mary Ann and her sister Eliza had  an elder brother James and I am descended from him, although I don't have any details of the Cumber connections I do have details of James King's ancestry down to my line, so far the I haven't been able to obtain any information earlier than Thomas and Susannah King.

Regards Joyce

Hello Joyce,
Thanks for this info, I would be interested in details of what you have. Do you reckon there are other siblings from Thomas and Susanna? I cannot get to the ERO for at least a couple of weeks to check South Weald parish records.
Have you checked these yet, I have much of the Cumbers line from these, but was concentrating on a specific surname when I was there last.
There are two marriages for a Thomas King and a Susannah , one in 1810 and the other in 1820 availablr in Pallots marriages, in Enfield (1810) to a Susanna Clarke and Hampstead (1820) to a Susannah Atterton. On, plus these two also, Bermondsey (1807) to Susannah Bettes and St Pancras(1818) to Susannah Richardson.

Or maybe none of these, but worth a look.

Hi Kevan

These are the details I have so far all baptised in South Weald

Someone going to ERO kindly looked these up for me and didn't have a lot of time so there could have been other children besides these four

James King bapt 25th Dec 1814 (Xmas Day) son of Thomas and Susan King.

Elizabeth King bapt 19th Oct 1817 dau of Thomas and Susan King.

Elizabeth and Mary Ann King bapt 6th Aug 1823 daughters of Thomas and Susan King.

Although their mother is recorded as being Susan on the 1841 census she is named Susannah! so whether we are looking for a marriage of Susan and Thomas or Susannah I really don't know it would be interesting to see if either of them where around in 1851 or perhaps they had died before then.

I have the marriage record of James King to Ann Cross or Crofs old spelling which took place in Great Warley on 6th June 1835, James was transcribed as John in the 1841 South Weald census (game keeper) James and Ann had eight children one of whom was George and he was living in Ongar Rd Kelvedon Hatch in 1881 with his wife Sarah and they went on to have 10 chidren.

I would think of if any of the marriages you mentioned was of our Thomas and Susannnah the 1810 one in Enfield was more likely as James was born in 1814 but it's just a guess!

Do you happen to have access to the 1851 census? maybe they where around then perhaps even living with one their children and I wonder what happened to Elizabeth bapt 1817 and Eliza.

I live in Cheshire so getting to Essex for research is difficult.

Regards Joyce

Hi Kevan

Many thanks for the census details you have put a lot of work into compiling the database.

I can't wait to spend some time looking through it properly.

Free BMd have updated their database last night and on it I noticed a Susan or Susannah .. can't remember which name now..died in Billericay in either 1842/3 I wonder if it would be worth sending for the cert and asking them to check that her husband was Thomas before sending it.

I have the image of James King's bapt I forgot to mention that on it his fathers occupation was a labourer, if you would like me to send it on to you by attachment let me know I will gladly do it.

I will also send you a short message to you diect from from Outlook Express that way you will have my direct email address.

Thanks Joyce
