Hermann marriage help? complete
« on: Wednesday 24 February 10 12:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a marriage for my great grandma's sister.

On the 1891 census the family are shown as living at milford street family details as follows:

Francis Hurman father born in Germany
Ann Hurman mother born in Hereford
Elizabeth A Hurman 17 born in Middlesex, London (not sure if middlesex is correct, difficult to read)
Alice Hurman 9 born in Cork, Ireland
Fanny Hurmann 4 born in Hereford

Census RG12/4390

On ancestry I have found a marriage for Ellizabeth Annie Hermann in the December quarter 1891 in Cardiff, how can I find out who she married?  Can I send for a marriage certificate without a spouses name?

It would appear that all three sisters married in Cardiff but only one actually stayed there.

Sue

Hi Sue - yes you can order the cert with just the woman's name, as long as you have the reference.

Have you tried to locate them on the next census?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I have no idea what  either of her spouse's names are so have not been able to find anything on the next census.   Will apply to GRO with reference details.  Thanks.  Sue

No I agree - couldn't find any of the family on the 1901 census - do you know where any of them went?

Just wondering whether Elizabeth would be found nearby.

Hello Sue

If you take a look at the partners options, they appear to be three women, but if you look at the index ,the top one is a man.

Baker Francis Emil W                   Cardiff 11a 559

I still can't find them later though.

Hi

The census info looks promising.  My grandma says that both Elizabeth and her sister Alice moved somewhere in the London area but she has no idea when or why they moved there.

I have a death certificate for the girls mother and it would appear that she was living in Dagenham with her daughter Alice and son in law James Henry Adams at the time of death.  Not much help in finding out about Elizabeth, but I suppose she could have been living nearby.  Only the youngest daughter Fanny remained in South Wales all her life.

Their father Francis Joseph Hermann is buried at Trealaw Cemetery in South Wales with his baby grandson.  There is no-one else buried in that grave.  It would appear that Ann Hermann moved to be near either one or both of her elder daughters after his death.

Interesting, this could explain why the mother moved away to stay with the other daughter.  The father Francis Joseph Hermann died in May 1914 and perhaps the death of a spouse and a daughter was too much to bear and the fact that the youngest daughter then had a baby to look after possibly meant she couldn't get enough support to get her through the grieving process if she stayed in Wales.
