Ray,

Welcome to the best place there is.

You ask, "Could he be the same William Legg born in Kempsford to parents Thomas & Anne ?".

We all ask that sort of question at some time or other and it's about the hardest there is :'(

I dare say you've found the three WL's in the IGI which were extracted from church records at Winchcomb, Kempsford and North Nibley during 1785 +/- 5 - take no notice of submitted entries and search the places at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(A-M).htm#PageTitle  you never know, a bell might ring :D

Your reasons for suspecting the Kempsford William might help to find the answer to your question.

Regards

Chas

P.S.

From my limited records of North Nibley burials comes, "September 22 1790 William Legg Infant" so as the parents of an earlier William had a child christened William in 1791  . . . . .

Ray,

Might reduce the odds on finding an answer - there was a WL married to a Martha Hewes in Kempsford - see the HW site.

Chas

See also marriages at Charlton Kings!

Hope he wasn't a serial bigamist :D  Difficult question wasn't it?

Ray,

Finally - from me anyway - one can also consider distances.  Not very reliable nowadays but can become more significant the further back one travels in time.

At http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html one can download a free parish locator programme which has a variety of facilities which you will find useful

Good hunting

Bear in mind Kempsford is near both the Oxon, Wilts and Berks borders so don't get bogged down just on Gloucs.

Burford had Leggs going back to at least the early 1600s.

Hi ChasH

Many thanks for the reply on this search. WL of Winchcomb seems worthy of keeping in view.

The distances you mention were in my mind when I eventually considered Kempsford, today's walking route is quoted as14.6 miles to Duntisboune Rouse, but I reckon that a mile or two could be knocked off that by using the Drovers route.  The distance from Winchcomb is quoted as17.3--I don't think that could have been much shortened.

You indicated a WL/ Martha Hewes marriage, I have notes of that 1826 event & their children & some grandchildren.--Also a family with itchy feet! What is the 'HW' site?

Back to itchy feet, WL 1784's son William, born 05 May 1822 at Daglingworth, M. at Stratton
to Hannah from Caldicot. They then had chidren in West Challow, - Berkshire, Daglingworth
and four more in Sapperton!

Regards
ray

Ray,

HW site?  You've used it, it was in my first reply - Hugh Wallis.

Hi Ricjudo,

Pleased to hear from you.   As you might have guessed from my post 7 MAR'10
my descent is from William Legg 's  Son - William, Born 1822, my G. grandfather.

I would be interested to know which child is your ancester?

        Regards,
