Joseph BAINES b. 1807 Claughton on Brock
« on: Monday 22 February 10 01:15 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor from Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, is Joseph Baines. His cemetery headstone has been found:

Inscription:
JOSEPH BAINES
BORN June 26, 1807
[looks like June 26, 1807. This date, independently recorded, does exactly match a Joseph Baines born in Claughton-on-Brock, Lancashire, England - emigrated to America 1827]
[cannot read next line]
ENGLAND
DIED June 21st, 1851

It sure looks like he is the second Joseph Baines in this family, thanks to an email through a Baines family researcher:

   6. Joseph BAINES b: 26 JUN 1807 in Claughton On Brock, LAN, ENG c: 26 JUN 1807 in Saint Thomas-Rc, Claughton On Brock LAN ENG

and they think he went to US.

Parents James Baines and Cecily Swarbrick.

I have a list of children from the Records of St. Thomas.

Does anyone know if son William also went to US?

   3. William BANES b: 6 JAN 1803 in Claughton On Brock, LAN, ENG c: 6 JAN 1803 in Saint Thomas-Rc, Claughton On Brock LAN ENG

I have perhaps found him in 1840, Allegheny, Allegheny, Pennsylvania:

1840 Census
William Banes two away from  Joseph Banes, if it is our Joseph. I think it likely it is.
looks like William Banes but hand writing is cramped.

Do you think this is him, or did he stay in England?

What did James Baines do for a living, does anyone know the Baines back then? or the Swarbricks?

Hi Miles

Do you know if James Baines (the father) had any siblings, I have an Anne Baines who is the mother of William Wild, he was christened at Claughton on Brock, St Thomas RC in 1816, so I'm guessing her year of birth to be c1790.

Would it be possible for you to put me in touch with the Baines family researcher you mentioned  ???

Kind regards

Simon

No, I dont have that information. I found her on Ancestry.com on UK site, in 2008 or early 09, but through US link, but I don't have a current membership to relook it up. If you do, you should be able to find the tree, and her contact info. I know she moved last year and there was an email change so I don't have current contact info without renewing my membership. A slip on my part.

There would seem to be some other children born to James and Cecily and baptised at St Thomas', Claughton:

1800
Jo son of James and Cecily Banes - baptised on 4th December
Godparents: William Seed & Elizabeth Wells

1803
William & Joseph [twins] sons of James and Cecily Banes - baptised on 6th January
Godparents: [William] Thomas Wittenham & Elizabeth Eccles [Joseph] Robert holding & Mary Wilson

1805
Ann daughter of James and Cecily Baines - baptised on 25th March
Godparents: Jes. Baines & Elizabeth Baines

1807
Joseph son of James and Cecily Baines - baptised 26th June
Godparents: Thomas Seed & Mary Wilson

1814
Henry son of James and Cecily Bains [olim Swarbrick] - born 17th August baptised 18th August
Godparents: Robert Abram & Mary Wilson

1816
Winifred daughter of James and Cecily Baines - born 23rd May baptised 24th May
Godparents: Moses Barlow & Ann Poulton

I ought to know more about Cecily Swarbrick - but at the moment I just can't place her. I will have a further look through my database and see if I can't root out some more about her. If I do then I'll get back to you.

Their first child - also baptised at St Thomas' Claughton

22nd May 1796
Margaret daughter of James and Cecily Baines
Godparents: John Swarbrick and Ellen Swarbrick
[my translation of Latin original]

Also: 1798
Thomas son of James and Cecily Baines - baptised 9th May
Godparents: William Baines & Isabel Threlfall

James Baines and Cecilia Swarbrick also stood as Godparents to Jane, the daughter of John and Margaret Bomfret who was baptised on 28th December 1795 at St Thomas' Catholic Chapel, Claughton. So that would confirm that Cecilia/Cecily Swarbrick was - like James - Catholic. Unfortunately, the only Catholic Cecily Swarbricks that I can find in this time frame are either too young to have married in 1795 or died as infants.

I shall continue to look, but that's as far as I've got at the moment and I've now got to go and cook supper - or we shall not eat tonight!

Had a longer look, but I can find no Cecily/Cecilia Swarbrick of the right sort of age who would be a candidate for the wife of Joseph - sorry,

Thanks so much for all of this information!
I did some searching on IGI and did not find Cecily or Ciceley Swarbrick that looked to be the same age either. Perhaps something will show up again if I sit on it. It is amazing how much turns up from time to time.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your data.

JB,

Some of my ancestors were Barlows from Claughton-on-Brock and my GGGGF was James Barlow who married a Mary Baines (b. 1789 Claughton d. 1872 in Wolstanton Staffordshire) whose mother was Margaret Swarbrick (b. 1750).

If I come across any more information I will let you know.

Mike H.
