James Cook, born about 1790
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 21:57 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for birth details on my GGG grandfather, James Cook (sometimes spelt Cooke) born about 1789/91 in Overseal (in Leicestershire at that time but now part of Derbyshire and records are located in the Matlock Archives).  He was later a blacksmith in Higham on the Hill, Leicestershire.

Please could some kind person also look to see if he was married to Sarah (surname unknown) in Overseal or thereabouts around 1815/17?

Many thanks
Mike

It may seem odd to reply to my own post!  ::)  However, I am pleased to have found a possible baptism for James Cook in a transcription on another website:  baptism St Peter's Overseal, 20th March 1791, son of John and Ann.

However, I still don't have a marriage between James Cook and Sarah, probably about 1815 in Overseal or Netherseal.  Can anybody help with these parish records, please?

... and since the above is a transcription, does anyone have easy access to the microfilms to confirm, please?

Just a suggestion as James appears to be a Widower in 1841 Census is it possible Sarah was not from Leics?
There is this possible Marriage in the right time-frame in Derbys.

James COOK
Sarah RENSHAW, 08 April 1816, North Wingfield, Derby, England

Have you been in contact with the person on Ancestry with this family in their Tree?
They have James marrying Sarah MARSTON, (1795-1840) in Nuneaton, Warwickshire 17 August 1812.
She is related to Samuel Cook 1826-1889

Hi Sharon -

Thanks very much for this link - in fact I found the possible birth information from Brett Payne's parish pages.  I haven't found anything further -  but I may need to search his excellent resources more.

Trish - thanks.  Yes, it is quite possible either of the marriages you mention are right - both are fairly nearby.  It would be really helpful if anyone local could kindly check the registers for more details, if any.
