Pico Gatekeeper. Completed.
« on: Saturday 20 February 10 10:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
Has anyone used the above product. I believe it comes installed with Kaspersky anti virus software.

I am using McAfee at the moment, but boot-up takes a long time.

I have been thinking about it, didn't realise which anti-virus software it used though, thought it would be it's own brand. Basically it's a separate system that runs off a USB key and saves you having to install an anti-virus system on your own PC (plus other security features). Your PC them doesn't require any security software of it's own thus saving resources and speeding it up! Thought it sounded like a really good idea but have seen differing reviews on the internet, so at the moment I'm hanging back.

I was quite keen on this product when it first appeared, but then I read quite a few reviews which suggested that the thing was fraught with bugs, and was quite flakey.  Bearing in mind the price of the product, and the fact that you're tied to a certain brand of AV software, which you still have to pay to keep updated, I decided against it.

If the main reason for changing is faster startup times and less load on the CPU, you might want to take a look at Eset Smart Security 4 - this uses pre-compiled code for faster running, and smaller memory usage, and they do claim faster startups.   And for the price of the Gatekeeper Pico, you can have 3 years subscription  :)

P.S.  You can make your PC start up faster if you remove all the programs that you don't use any more, because each one will be loading modules and drivers in case you do run it, and these take time to load.  You could also check to see if your PC supports hibernation or standby modes.

Hi Mark, Nick.
                  Thanks for your input.
My computer seems to have slowed down since I changed over to McAfee.
I will check out Eset AV.

Thanks

Quite a technical review here.  Just scroll down to the Conclusion section if you find yourself falling asleep.  :)

Theres something about this product I`m not sure of, I can`t critcise it, but just something worries me, I think I`ll stick to normal security products.

Just to add to Nick`s endorsement of Esset its good, V-Good, if you only want the A/V you can get Nod32 from the same people. It doesn`t always come top in tests, but I`ve been using the same product as Nick for a few years (different versions obviously) & had no problems.

Many people will have their own favs & if you`ve had no problems then stick with what you feel comfortable with, some protection is better than no protection.

Hi,
Thanks downside for that detailed review. I think that I will stay with McAfee.
