Hi there again,
I know that the date of birth is the same as my Nanna. The only Edith King around that date is the one with a birthdate the same as Nanna and a baptism date and place of Bareilly.
My Nanna's marriage cert was no help at all. It just had that her father was a soldier no initials nothing for either mother or father, wonder how they got away with that one. So no help on either marriage or death cert. All I really had was date of birth and this is a match. Id say we have a match as Simla and Bareilly are in West Bengal... the other Kings are in other areas.
Anyway I wrote to the british library, they have a section on the british army in India. This is the reply;
I am pleased to inform you that I have located your grandmother’s baptism entry (ref. N/1/221/160) which confirms the information you already have. Edith’s father’s profession is described as Commissariat Department. It is likely that some papers relating to Thomas King’s career may be found in the India Office Records. I have also traced him in the Thacker’s Indian Directory. As the list of European inhabitants gives only initials the following details would have to be compared with other sources:
1892 Conductor, Commissariat Department, Bareilly.
1894 Honorary Lt., Commissariat Department, Nawgong.
1895 Honorary Captain, Commissariat Department, Dinapur.
1899 Superintendent, Commsr’s Office, Hoshangabad.
1900 Hoshangabad. (It is the last entry).
The surname King is very popular and it would require a thorough search to establish whether he is the same person. It is very unlikely that Edith was the only child but finding her siblings may prove a very time consuming task.
So Jorose or others what do you think and where can I go from here?
