i need to find out further info about my family and have had a look on ancestry.co.uk.
can anyone tell me if they have used this site if it was useful to them or not as it asks for you to subscribe.
any help greatly appreciated

Lots of previous posts on here asking the same question.  Some people use FindMyPast and others use Ancestry

I have had an Ancestry sub for about 10yrs now and have got used to it's little quirks but it serves my purpose

You can try a 14 day free trial.  You have to give  your credit card information, but it is easy to  cancel should you not want to subscribe.  Leave it until day 13 before you cancel, as they do not automatically give you 14 days should you cancel before.
You will be amazed what you can find out in that short time.

That way you also get a software package to record your FH findings so a really good deal

De Luxe edition is £14.95 but you only get 3mths access included so worth the extra £5

I have subscribed to Ancestry for quite some time & found it very useful, not just for the census.

I have also recently sbuscribed to Findmypast mainly for the 1911 census (it was becoming very expensive to PayAsYouGo) and have found many of the missing families from cetain census details on there & vice versa.

Both sites are good but personally find Ancestry to be more useful to me with my London ancestors.

I subscribed to Ancestry for 2 years and became very frustrated with it. Most searches I did resulted in too much information, most of which was of little relevance. Two months ago I switched my annual subscription to Find My Past and the only regret I have is that I didn't do it sooner. It is so much easier to use and all the results it produces are relevant and presented in a much more acceptable fashion, particularly the census family transcriptions. I would not go back to Ancestry now even if it were half the price!

have had a quick look at both as i need the one who will offer more results for the scots and irish but i take on board what has been said here.
its so frustrating when you hit a brick wall especially trying to find the irish marriages dating back to 1868  .aaarrhhh!!

You could try this site for Irish Civil Registrations. Select the link to Browse our record collections and then select Europe

Both Ancestry and Findmypast have 14 day free trials that would give you a chance to see if they would be useful but they don't have a great deal of Irish or Scottish records.
