Marriage Certificate - Handwriting Clarification

Hi, Greetings from Australia.  I'm new to your Board so appreciate your patience with me.  I've been researching for some time now but new to the County of Essex.

I ordered a marriage certificate and would like clarification on the Occupation of the bride's father.  My interpretation is "Sexton" but need some reassurance and/or correction.

If they were married at the Parish of Canewdon would that be the church of St Nicholas?

I cropped your image down as we're not allowed to post full certificates etc. which are copyright materials.

I have to say the first letter of the occupation does look like the "S" of "Spinster", so I would tend to agree with you that it's "Sexton".

For what its worth, I think the first letter is an L - and I read the occupation as Lector. I know Wikipedia isn't always reliable but this is the entry for what a lector does...

Assuming the certificate says 'Married in the... Parish Church, then yes it would most likely have been St. Nicholas

Do you have the family on any census returns? If not post some dates and names and someone on here will have a go at finding them for you, see what the father's ocupation is on the census.

Hi All.

Suzanne there is someone who may already have your family
on their tree.

Also on the Censuses in 1841/51 John with wife Sarah is
noted as Ag Lab.

On the 1851 Census Mary is noted as Mary Gentry and wife
of Robert with a child.

The marriage if I am correct was in the June Qtr of 1850.

Robert is noted on 1841 census as being born in 1826, Mary 1833.

Prue, sorry about uploading the whole certificate, I'll know next time!

Gordon, I looked up the word "lector" and not to sure about that as being a person who is linguistic I doubt that my John Wright was his daughter when she married couldn't read or write.  But I will keep that on the back-burner.

David, the History House website is great thanks for that.  I will post some names and dates on the forum and for a census look. 

Sandy I think that's my John in th 1841 census with his wife Sarah.  I also found him listed in the local inhabitants directory of 1848 for Canewdon that David (above) gave me the link to.  John is also listed as an Agr. Labourer. 

Wonder if he could have been the Sexton at St Nicholas as well?
