Help identifying place of birth
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 18:04 GMT (UK) »
This is an extract from the 1861 census for a Jane Wyeth who was born abt 1823. She was living in Kensington at the time with her husband and family. His name was James Few although this has variously been transcribed as Farr and Fan. The 1881 census is not much help as the enumerator put down Kensington for the whole of the family.

The place looks something like Bamstead to me but that is not a Hampshire place name as far as I am aware.

In the 1851 census her place of birth is given as Hants, Wootton.

Thanks.

That's a distinct possibility, particularly as it is a stone's throw from Upper Wootton and Wootton St Lawrence.

I've done a google and tracked down an interactive tythe map for part of Hampshire which shows the parish of Wootton St Lawrence and has a Timothy Wyeth on land belonging to John Mears.

http://www.dutton.force9.co.uk/tithes/parishes.htm

Is it possible for someone to check the parish records for Wootton St Lawrence and see if a Jane Wyeth was baptised there abt 1823?

Bob,

Do you know Jane's father's name at all?

Looking at the enumerator's writing on a previous page, I think it does begin 'Ramsd.....'

Ramsdell became a separate parish in 1868 and was formed from Tadley, Monk Sherborne ad Wooton St  Lawrence.

Not having a lot of success at the moment  :(

Bob,

This is the closest that I can find - a possibility, but no other names look or sound sufficiently like Wyeth.

Jane White baptised 17 Nov 1822 in Tadley, parents Timothy & Anne.

On the 1841 census (HO107/386/13/19 p 10, parish of Wootton St Lawrence, address given as Ramsdale), this family is found:

Timothy Wyeth 40 Brickmaker
Ann 30
Jeane 15
Sarah 14
Henery 9
William 7
Eliza 5
Walter 3
Joseph 4
all born in Hampshire.

Joseph is recorded as Wyeth on baptism (in Wootton St Lawrence), Eliza, Walter, William and a Mary Hannah as Withe (in Tadley), Henry, James, Jane, Sarah Anne as White (in Tadley).

I think this must be the family.

Thanks very much for that, Nell.

You may recall that you helped me with Jane Wyeth in the last day or so.
I am just over the border in Wiltshire so it is only about 1 1/2 hours to Winchester.

All in all, there is quite a Hampshire connection.

Robert Hughes 1 was born in Wexford in 1796, was a member of the Wexford Militia and the 12th Foot. He married Sarah Ware twice. Once in Cork in September 1837, in the Catholic church then again, a month later, in a Church of Ireland church in Rincurran. I suspect he was Catholic and her family was C of E so the dual marriages would have kept both families happy. They had a son, Robert Hughes 2 in 1838 before he left the 12th Foot and moved to Southampton, where he stayed for the rest of his life. Robert Hughes 2 married Emma Few, who presumably had been a bit of a naughty girl as she was in a home for Penitent Women in Southampton. Emma's mother was Jane Wyeth, who was married to James Few, who was a coachman living in Kensington but was born in Ely, Cambridge.

I was not aware of any of this two weeks ago so it has been a bit of a discovery.
Each Robert Hughes has named their eldest son Robert, making me Robert Hughes 6. Of course, I have twin daughters and Emily has threatened me with physical violence if I suggest she changes her name to Roberta!

I phoned Hampshire Records today and checked out what I needed for a Records Office pass. I have the Wiltshire one but Hampshire is part of CARN which I don't belong to yet.
I think I will pop down next week and check out what records I can get access to.
It is much easier to be sat there with the whole fiche or document and flick through the pages than keep asking one off questions.
Thanks for all the help.

Regards

Bob

hi Bob
I have done a lot of research of the Wythe/Wyeth families of North Hants. Timothy's son Walter was my Grandfather x3. There is a lot of confusion about Timothy as the father of both Walter and William who both named a William Wythe as their father on their respective marriage certs.

If you can shed any light on this it would most wecome.

Thanks Ray.

I am happy to pass on any information I may have or gain in the future. On the marriage certificate of James and Jane, her father is stated as being Timothy Wyeth, Builder. One of the witnesses is Sarah Wyeth, whose signature is marked with an X. Would she be Jane's mother or sister?
