MACRO Family
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 11:18 GMT (UK) »
With help from a very distant cousin and the SRO, I have traced my Macro's back to William Macrow born in 1638 in Dalham, Suffolk, the fifth son of Arthur Macro and Ann.

SRO looked for Arthur in Ousden, Hargrave, Denham, Gazely and Moulton with no success.

Macro, Macrow, Macroe, Macrowe were living in the following Suffolk villages about this time:
Cavenham, Glemsford, Great Welnetham, Fornham All Saints, Risby, Shimpling, Lavenham, Levington, Aldeburgh, and Bury St Edmunds.

Any suggestions for further research appreciated.

This is ONLY a sugestion.....look at history. What was happening in the whole of England and the rest of the world.
I only have one line going back that far and they were Huguenots who fled France. Most Huguenots who migrated to England were in well documented communities. Except that my lot went to Ireland. Took me years to learn that some Huguenots went to Ireland. I still don't have a birth for my direct ancestor, but do have his siblings.

Good luck.

Hi,

I happen to be going thru an old book containing Suffolk marriages  which includes Risby.
I see these entries which may be of interest to you;

Joseph COX, citizen of London, and Elizabeth MACRO, eldest dau.
of Thomas Macro of Bury St. Edmunds, gent 9 jan 1678.

Thomas MACRO, only son of the aforesaid Thomas Macro, & Susan Cox, only dau.
of John Cox, rector of R (Risby sic)

Thanks Diddy, I hadn't checked here in a long time.
I went to Dalham in July just to see it.
We have Arthur's marriage recorded to Ann of Dalham, but no date and no information on where Arthur came from.

I am from the the Macrows, via Squires.  I have manage to find Thomas Macrow, The Yeoman, Born 1543 - October 1623.  His father was Ralph (Rafe) Macrow, born 1523 - 1568, spouse, I believe, was Ellen Evers.  Very few of the sites go further back that 1538, unless the family is of particular interest and note, like Thomas Tyrrell, who is related, but the tree goes through my Great, great grandfather's son, who would be an an uncle.

Not sure how how to go beyond the beginning of the 16th century, this is where thing start to become very interesting....!

The other problems with the sites is that there are a lot of erroneous leads and fake Coats of Arms, etc.

Would be very interested in any input and suggestions on how to conduct further research into the Macros/ws/es, and so on. ??? ???

I am new to the site, so please bear with me if I am making assumptions or mistakes.

Thanks

I have managed to trace back to Adam Macro, Risby Suffolk. I have a copy of his 1565 will from Suffolk Records Office. They lived within a few miles of Risby for the next 300 years.
I was not able to establish a link between the Glemsford Macro families and my one. I suspect mine came from Soham in Cambridgeshire, but no data.
Mine are not related to the Bury St Edmunds family, which had some prominent people of the time.
If you haven't used them, the Records Office are very good.
Best of luck!
