I don't know much about ancestry, but as far as I know their BDM data is simply a copy of FreeBDM. It's free to use (you do not need a subscription) - I use the Ancestry version when FreeBDM is being super slow.

Can someone please correct me if this is wrong - I didn't think they had the complete register.

Yes, it is actually a copy of freebmd - just a little behind in the coverage.
