Connolly, McCabe, Aughnamullen, Timmin

Hi there - been searching for years for more information on grandparents on Irish side of family.  My Grandfather was Patrick Connolly, born c1873 to Peter Connolly and Anne McCabe who were from Aughanmullen, or so I was told.   Other siblings were John, Rose, Mary and Anne.  Patrick and John left Ireland for Scotland where they settled.  I think my grandparents could have met at the marriage of John to Rose Ann Farrelly in 1902 in Edinburgh because my grandmother, Bridget Timmin (from Cootehill, Co Cavan), was a witness at the wedding.  My Grandparents married in 1903 and my mum was born in 1908.  From then on everything is well documented but I am really desperate to find out as much as possible about their lives before they came to Edinburgh. If anyone out there knows more, I would love to hear from them.  Thanks.

You could check 1911 census to see what relatives might have been left in Ireland (1901 should soon be added)-

I.G.I. (www.familysearch.org) lists several children of a Peter Connolly and an Ann McCabe:
1. Anne born 10 Sept.1864 Cootehill, Co. Cavan (page 171 in civil register)
2. son born 2 Apr.1866 Cootehill , Co. Cavan (page 182 in civil register)
3. Mary born 21 Apr.1867 Co.Cavan
4. John born 20 Aug.1871 Co.Cavan
5. Patrick born 1 May 1873 Ireland

Should add that while Cootehill is in Co. Cavan it is on the border with Co. Monaghan.

Thanks for that, aghadowey.  My family had always believed that Grandfather Patrick Connolly came from County Monaghan and it was my Grandmother, Bridget Timmin, who came from Cootehill, County Cavan.  Perhaps the family had moved from Cavan before Patrick was born.  
Can you clear something else up for me?  Where would I get a copy of his birth certificate?

Your g/father may have been from Monaghan but marriages take place in Bride's parish. The were no guards patrolling the county borders, no passport controls and no Berlin Wall between Monaghan and Cavan, it's just a line on the map and means very little! Some houses are actually on the border and the kitchen can be in one county and the bedroom in another.  They could even be next door neighbours but in different counties!

Just because they lived in different counties doesn't mean they didn't know each other. Can't advise on what churches to look at as you don't give their religion. Registry started 20 years earlier for Protestants than Catholics....

They were both probably RC.  The story in the family was that Patrick left home to avoid an "arranged" marriage.  Seems a bit far fetched!  And brother, John, left with him.  I don't know if my grandparents knew each other before they left Ireland but they certainly both ended up in Edinburgh where they were married.  It would be too much to hope for that records exist of sea travel from Ireland to Scotland.  If I can find out exactly where Patrick was born, that might help.

Ireland was part of the U.K. so no receords were kept of people travelling between Ireland and Scotland, England and Wales.
