neath cemetery

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows how many cemeteries are in the Briton Ferry area in Neath.  I have just been told by a cousin of my Mums that my Grt Grandparents are buried in the Briton Ferry Cemetery, Is there only one there or more   Also are there any records online for the cemetery ?

Also would anyone know where an area called "The Green" is or was in Neath ?

On the Green this might be an area called today 'the Greenways'. Google Neath on Multimap, zoom in (using the '+' option) and look to the left of the train station symbol. You'll see the Greenways as a road.

Its known locally as 'the Green' and the 'Green Mission' hall is also there. Its quite industrialised but is also the site of the cattle market - so it was probably green before the cattle pens etc. went up!

There is a cemetery called Ynysmaerdy in BF; not sure if its council or chapel etc. Other chapels have cems too, of course.

Hi Jan; I'm not from Neath but have lived there since the early 1970s (married a Neath girl) so I think I'm an adopted son.

My local history interests are in Swansea, which is where I was born and brought up. My wife does nag me (nicely) to do some research on Neath!

Bernard & Pip, thanks for the help.  Just to say that I contacted Ynysmaerdy Cemetery in Briton Ferry & was emailed back today by a very helpful lady who offered to look for me.  She found the burials of William H Jones & his wife Agnes buried together in the Cemetery.  Also in the same grave was my Grans sister Beautrice, I didnt know when she died until today.  Also a baby girl was buried with them, who I think by the surname, was my Grans half sisters baby... I had never heard of her until today, she died at a few months old, which was very sad.

I have a plot number so will visit in the Spring, would anyone know if there is a map of the cemetery online or where I could get one ?

Hi Jan,

I've never found a plan, and it's quite a big cemetery, but there is usually someone there, in the little out building, and they are very helpful when you want to find a grave.

I photographed all the War Graves there and still have the spreadsheet. If you want to tell me the plot number, I should be able to tell you the names of the War Graves in the same plot and that might help with finding the grave you are looking for.

At least that would give me some direction to go when I get there.

Hi Jan,

There are only 2 War Graves with Commonwealth War Grave stones in that section.

Trevor Charles Haffron Plot D Grave 200

William Arthur Lodwick Plot D Grave 146

If my memory is behaving itself, I think Plot D is to the right as you go through the gates.

At least the War Graves stand out and when you find them you will be able to work out from there where D128 is, because it won't be far from them.

I hope there is a stone for you to photograph.
