Hi Sheila,

I bought a birth cert years ago for one of Hannah's children, since there seemed no other way of finding out her maiden name. There is a Holm Cultram transcript at Carlisle RO, which I checked a few times in the past, but this family seemed to be largely absent from the records of the parish church. I've wondered if they were nonconformists of some sort.

I haven't thought about this family for a while, but I think I concluded that Hannah's parents were the following, who married at HC on 17 Aug 1799:

Willam Beattie of the Parish of Holm Cultram Bachelor aged 24 and Anne Messenger of same Parish Spinster aged 20 and upwards. Licence.
                                                                                              William Beattie
                                                                                              Ann Messenger
       Thomas Messenger
       Isaac Potts

I think the Beattie mentioned above is from the same family. A James Beatty married an Ann Wise in Annan on 12/6/1801 - "both of Abbeyholm" - and I believe he was William's brother.

I'm wondering if the Fearons maybe married by licence. I've seen printed Carlisle marriage bonds up to 1800. They also lived in Caldbeck at one point.

Best wishes,

Stephen

Hi Stephen

Thanks for that. I came to the same conclusion with Anne Messenger however when I found a site with Gretna Green marriages on it there was a James Beatty married to Ann Messenger of Abbey Holme,England!!!! Something weird afoot here?

Happy hunting and many thanks

I got that marriage from an old CFHS newsletter - Strays from the marriage register of Annan. William and Ann appeared to have children called John (c.1800), James (c.1802), Hannah (c.1804) and William (1811/12). They have a Helena living with them at Skinburness in 1841 - not sure how she fits in. She turns up at Rock Ferry in 1871; Troutbeck 1881; died back in Wigton district in 1907 (BEATTIX on Freebmd).

I think William was the one baptized at Allonby 6 Jan 1775, and his parents were James Baty & Hannah Poole, married HC 23 Dec 1770. My theory is that this James had a brother George who married Tamar Skelton in 1772, and he was father of the James who married Wise (explaining his two/three sons called George).
