Nathaniel Hill death
« on: Wednesday 17 February 10 03:01 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the death notice of Nathaniel J. Hill who died in London in early 1914.  He was originally from Bridgwater, Somerset, and became a butler at the home of Alfred Elkington around 1910.  We lost track of him, and only one Nathaniel J. Hill is listed in the index.  Can anyone shed light on this for me please?  He was born in 1869.  Any help is appreciated.

Hi

The first thing is to obtain a death certificate for this man to see that he is the right man as his age on death - 51 would give this man's birth year of circa 1863. On the 1901 census there is a Nathaniel J Hill aged 38 living in Lambeth with his wife and 5 children. He was born in Islington and was a bookbinder's engineer

Unless the family of this Nathaniel J Hill inserted a short notice in a local newspaper paper of which there were very many local newspapers in London (then over 7 million people) - the death registration states Lambeth, there will be nothing in newspapers.

This is the British Library newspaper database so you can check what newspapers were around in 1914 for the Lambeth area

http://catalogue.bl.uk/F/?func=file&file_name=find-b&local_base=NPL

Lambeth local archives will hold some of those local newspapers so if you have an exact date of death you you might be able to request a search of local newspapers from them

http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/LeisureCulture/LocalHistory/Archives.htm

If he was buried locally the guide at the top of the London and Middlesex board

A GUIDE TO BURIALS IN THE LONDON AREA

will give you the contacts for local Lambeth cemeteries.

Thank you so much for the leads.....sometimes I just draw a blank......even though at times it seems so obvious to others!  Thanks!
