Northumberland Fusiliers
« on: Tuesday 16 February 10 23:55 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping that someone can help me in researching my grandfathers exploits in WW1 I know that he was in the Northumberland Fusiliers regiment number 65708. The story that I have goes like this. He was taken involved in an explosion and was taken prisoner by the Germans during the battle of the Somme. and was unconscious for several days. They operated on him and when he regained conscious he found him self in a Pow of foreign prisoners. They apparently took great delight in hiding his true identity from the Germans, but was eventually discovered and removed from this prison. He eventually made a full recovery and went on to live well into his eighty.

Well that is all we have as usual he never discussed this war and we only managed to obtain this information over several decades.

Hi Stephen
Found Toms medal card however cant see any other records that survived...You next course maybe to get to Kew and look at the medal roll and see if a battalion is given(or get a researcher to get it??)
Once(If) you get a battalion you can look at the Unit War Diary and see what they were up to.
He didnt go overseas til after Jan 1916.

Hope this helps

Tom:

My grandfather was also in the Northumberland Fusiliers (26th Tyneside Irish). I will do my best to see what I can do to assist you with your research, but I can not send you to the others who may have knowledge.

The certificate would seem to show that your grandfather was mobilised on 9th May 1917 as part of the 5th Territorial Force Battalion [which should be the same as 1st/5th Battalion]

My grandfather Ethelbert Elliott served in the Northumberland Fusiliers  Reg. No 48157. He joined in Hartley Witney on 7/10/1915.  He went to France on 6.10.1915 to 6.1.1917, back to France 7.1.1917 to 17.4.1917 Home 18.4.1917 to 13.11.1917.  He was shot in the face through his mouth .  He survived WW1 and married and had two children Brenda and Dennis (my father) but sadly died when my Father was just 7 years old.  We have lots of photos of him but I am not quite sure what battalion he served in.  I am told he was in the Battle of Arras whether he was injured there I don't know.
