A.F.O. on details relating to a death
« on: Tuesday 16 February 10 19:44 GMT (UK) »
When looking up the death of an ancestor from the index references, by the name of the deceased are the following initials, A.F.O. Does anyone know what these stand for? The person concerned was a mariner so could be something connected with that but not sure. Can anyone help?

Who? When? Where?
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Is this the entry you mean? http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Surname  First name(s)  Age  District  Vol  Page
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Dec 1899   (>99%)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Halewood  William A J  0  Toxteth Park  8b 214

AJ are the initials of William's second and third names and 0 is his age, so this is the registration of the death of an infant not a mariner, I'm afraid.  This appears to be the child's birth, registered in the same quarter:

Births Dec 1899
~~~~~~~~
Halewood  William Albert J     Toxteth Park  8b 207
How old were you expecting your William to be?
Dear Ermy,
                Thanks so much regarding the info relating to William Halewood. I think I digressed somewhat as I had'nt thought the William Halewood I was looking for was a child, but from your info I believe he is the child of William Halewood senior.
I was trying to find the death of senior WH. He married my husbands grandmother Sarah Isaac in 1898, he was 21, however she married again in 1907 as a widow so he must have died between the marriages in 1898 and 1907 when Sarah was free to marry again, but I have'nt been able to trace the date of his death. Being a mariner I thought he may have died at sea but don't know how you find out this. It is obvious from your response that they had a child which I did'nt know about, so thanks once again very much for sharing this with me, it is much appreciated. Regards whinery.
