Burial, in All Saints, Stranton,Hartlepool 1852

Hi I have aquired a burial record from Durham Records Online

Burials, Hartlepool District- record number: 211840.2
Location: Stranton
Church: All Saints
Anglican
21 Jan 1852, of West Hartlepool, age:29

How can I obtain death cert for him?  Think he is one of mine, is there any other way to check this out??  Been all around and am stuck at this?  Would the death cert give any more info as to cause of death or family connections??    Thanks

You don't give his name but you can use FreeBmd to get his death registration, then apply for a copy at http://www.col.statistics.gov.uk/
A death certificate will give the cause of death and the name of the informant who may, or may not, be a member of his family.

A search of Tees Valley indexes shows only one Thomas Smith death in 1852 and that was registered in Middlesbrough

It might be worth contacting Hartlepool register office to see if they can help, if they have his death registered with them, they should be able to confirm any known details before you buy the certificate

Thanks for that info from newspaper on death of Thomas Smith in Hartlepool in Jan 1852.  Going to try and get the death cert and see if he is one of mine?? As you say he seems to be the only one at the time.  Strange that he and his wife and son are on the 1851 census as running the 'Waterloo Inn' on the headland and two or three years later she is on her own there (and named in gazeteer as proprietor at the Inn,when in 1851, it was Thomas.) with her son, then remarried as a widow in 1856 in Hartlepool to a John McMillan (ex naval and a customs and excise coastguard based in Hartlepool)and moved to Renfrewshire in Scotland from therein. Wonder if it was an accident  or an illness that claimed him so young?  Soooo nosey! Will keep you posted on this

Checked out The Tees valley Index record for Middlesborough for my Thomas Smith , just in case.  They replied that it was not a match.  He wasn't aged 29 and he did not die in Hartlepool.  I am going to email Hartlepool Register Office prior to ordering a Death Cert for him to check if the Durham records On Line Burial record is a possibility? They cannot give out information but can help point towards the direction with help for an application of certificate. (They can tell me if I'm wrong anyway)
Apparently the boundries haven't changed much since 1837 but some parts of Hartlepool's records are held at Stockton, Bishop Auckland and Peterlee also.   So...... he was from Witton Le Wear,lived and worked in West Hartlepool.  Died in West Hartlepool, according to a local newspaper obituary for 24th January 1852.  On 18th January, 1852 aged 29 at West Hartlepool.  The burial record for 21st Jan 1852 at All Saints Church, Stranton, seems to match but may be just coincidental.  This guy is causing me problems at the minute!! Thanks for your help. Will let you know how I fare with this.

Hi carol, have: you checked the nebmd following the links for Hartlepool? i have always found the staff at H'pool reg.office very helpful.
My great, great grandfather was also Thomas Smith who died in hartlepool, born Trimdon 1790. Could this be the same family? dont know if he had a son called Thomas not on any census I can find!
