There seems to be a little discrepency with Samuel's age

Samuel c. 1841 seems to be the son of hannah

Spittall
Castle Donnington
hannah Burton 20 Lace Runner
Samuel 1
both b in county
HO107 594 23 30 6

this Samuel seems to have moved into Derbys later

then there is Robert with a son Samuel b.c. 1836/7

1841
Sptittall
Castle Donnington
Robert Burton 25 Lace Weaver
Sarah 25
Sarah 5
Samuel 4
Jane 2
Henry 6mths
all b in Leicestershire
HO107 594 23 31 10

1851
Spital St Castle Donington
Robert Burton Head M 39 Silk Blend Maker Castle Donington
Sarah wife 34 Lace Runner Diseworth Leics
Sarah Ann daughter 15 lace Runner Diseworth
SAMUEL son 14 Coal Higgler Castle Donington
Jane daughter 12 Lace Runner castle Donington
Henry son 10 Salt Higgler castle Donington
Mary daughter 7 Castle Donington
Elizabeth daughter 4 Castle Donington
Hannah daughter 1 Castledonington

this samuel moved (I think) to Yorkshire?

Which Samuel are you following

(Possibly the mods will move this to Leics board -as the family were all b leics)

Thank you for your quick reply & for so much information. Much appreciated.
Samuel was the father of Ernest Burton b1880.
I am trying to find out a. where Robert Burton is buried  & or who his parents were.
I have traced Ernest Burton's wife's family (direct ancestors), back to Ingenulf de Burton 1042.

I have found Ernest on the 1891 census -son of Samuel -but I don't think this Samuel is the son of Robert ????

Do you have samuel's marriage cert???
That would give father's name (or a blank if he was illigit)

I am trying to save you from following the wrong line - as is so easy to do--when children are given the same name as someone who lives quite close to them

Samuel is in the 1901 census (with son Ernest - my grandfather) & 1881 census 6 Dog Kennels, Alfreton, Belper & 1891 Cinder Bank, Alfreton. I'm fairly sure of being on the right lines

Hi,

I followed the Samuel b.c.1841 through and his age is consistent throughout the census-he is the one you quoted- but he is the one who "fits in" with being the son of hannah Burton

Samuel b.c. 1836/7 -his age is consistent through the census -and he marries an Elizabeth (b derby) and moves to York -this one is more likely to be the son of Robert (1841 age 4, 1851 age 14 -with family)

If you have Samuel's marriage cert this would confirm who father is - if you are only fairly sure you are right , then you need some documentation to prove

I am only trying to save you following an incorrect line

Great you have family group photos -the children of Samuel and Sarah Dooley are mentioned on the census - it is the siblings and parents of Samuel who seem to not be the best fit
The siblings you have listed are the ones from the census -children of Robert and Sarah
You also state Samuel had 1 brother -henry b. 1841
Henry appears on the census -1841 he is 6mths old=son of Robert/Sarah

What I am trying to point out is that henry was born c.1840/41 -and Samuel was c. 4 years older than Henry-giving Samuel a birth year c.1836/7

The Samuel who married Sarah Dooley -which is the Samuel you are interested in -consistently gives his y.o.b. as 1840/41 -which would indicate he is the son of hannah =he is age 1 in 1841 census

Samuel's marriage to Sarah Dooley was registered in Belper district -so maybe they married in Alfreton - I could have a look when I go to records office -if you wish.

I hope I don't sound unfriendly - but in my Derbys families there are uncles same age and p.o.b. as nephews -marrying about the same time -and many have  the wrong people in their tree - some researchers had even turned 2 couples (with similar names) into 1 couple -it is easily done

the "other" Samuel -age 4 in 1841-who married Elizabeth and moved to York- consistently gives y.o.b. as 1836/7 -which indicates he was the son of Robert and Sarah?????

As there is another Samuel who would "fit " the parents slightly better you really do need to be certain

also -Samuel the son of Robert Burton and Sarah -had more than 1 brother and more sisters than you mentioned

as already posted
1841 children at home were Sarah 5, Samuel 4, Jane 2, Henry 6mths
1851 Children at home were Sarah Ann 15, Jane 12, Henry 10, Mary 7, Elizabeth 4, Hannah 1

then 1861 shows
20 bath St Derby
Robert Burton Head m 50 Lace maker Castle Donnington Leics
Sarah wife 43 Disworth Leics
Jane daughter 22 Castle Donington
Henry son 20 Castle Donington
Elizabeth daughter 14 Castle Donington
hannah daughter 11 CastleDonington
William son 9 Castle Donington
Stephen son 6 Derby
Mary daughter 3 Derby
RG9 2495 77 22

1871
20 Bath St Derby
Robert Burton head M 59 Lab Railway stores Castle Donington leics
Sarah wife 54 Diseworth Leics
Hannah daughter 21 Silk Mill Engine Hand Castle Donington
William son 19 Painter's lab Castle Donington
Mary h daughter 12 Silk Mill Engine hand Derby
Emily daughter 9 Derby (I assume this is "Amelia")
Thomas Twigger Lodger M 44 Elastic Weaver Bedworth Warwicks
Mary A Twigger U 18 Bedworth Warwicks
RG10 3560 89 24

The other coincidence is -the "other" Samuel (who I think is the son of the above family) -moved to Derby -his wife Elizabeth was b Derby -then they moved to York
