Walter Clarence Barker
« on: Monday 15 February 10 22:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello everybody,

My name is Natasha Yelland, and I am looking for information on my great-grandfather Walter Clarence Barker, particularly his time in the First World War. I know that he was born on 11th December 1894 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England and he died on 19th December 1955 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England. Also, he was married to Gertie Butterfield, and had two children (Dorothy and David).

Hope to hear from you soon,

Natasha

Hello Natasha and a warm welcome to Rootschat :)

To start off with, are you sure that Walter's birthdate was 1894 rather than 1893?  This looks the most likely birth registration for him:

Birth Dec 1893

Walter Clarence BARKER

North Bierley 9b 194

He's in Thornton in the 1901 census with parents John and Hannah and several siblings - do you already have that? The census ref is RG13/4178/84/21.

What do you know about Walter's WW1 service? Do you already have a medal card/regiment/regimental number for him?  There are a couple of medal cards which might be his, but on first glance I can't see surviving service or WW1 pension records for him.

Hi Anna,

You may be write him being in 1893, and I already have him on the 1901 census. However, I don't know much about his WWI service. Only that I have a picture of him in his army uniform.

This may help pick out his service records,  In 1911 his address is 4 King Edward Terrace, Thornton, Bradford.  Parents John & Hannah.  He's a 17 yr old Apprentice Joiner & Builder at this time.

Natasha, could you post the pic of him, someone may be able to recognise the uniform.
