Whitcomb - Reed
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 22:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for more information on the marriage between Charles Whitcomb and Sophia Louisa Bestly Reed which took place (according to IGI) on 6th Aug 1813 at Holy Trinity Church Gosport
From her death notice in the newspaper in the Cape, South Africa,  she would have been 14 at the time so I am hoping that the parish register may indicate who her parents were.
I have not been able to locate any other records for her on IGI.
I am assuming that Charles' parents were Thomas and Sarah and I have found a record for a birth for him in 1793, baptised 7th Mar again at the Holy Trinity Church
If anyone has access tot he Parish Registers I would dearly love a transcript
Thanks
Gillian

Couldn't find anything on her, but it looks as if Thomas Whitcomb was married to Sarah Scarlet 24th September 1785 Portsea Hampshire-this is near Gosport.
First child born to them in 1786 Thomas followed by Sarah 1787, Louisa 1789,John 1791, Charles 1793, Sarah 1796, Caroline 1800, Emma 1803 and Mathilda Louisa 1806.
regards.

Hi

Thanks I found those records on the IGI - I guess I'll need to order the film from LDS and see if there is some more information on the marriage record - I am hoping that there may be some indication of who Sophia's parents might be

Please don't get your hopes up that there will be any indication of her parents.  If she was only 14 then it should say "with the consent of her father" or "mother" if her father was dead, but it may well not name him or her.  Pre-1837 fathers' names were not included.

I did check to see if there was a licence in Hampshire, but drew a blank.  Do you know if Sophia came from Hapmshire at all, only I can't find a suitable baptism.

Hi

No I haven't a clue about where she came from  - I obtained her death date from a newspaper transcript. There doesn't appear to be a death record on the NAAIRS database unless it is attached to her will filed in 1831 a year ofter her death. I will have to ask me Niece to get a copy.

As for Charles I recently obtained a copy of his letter of application to act as a Notary in Cape Town. In it he states he qualified in by completing a length of service in the courts at Westminster and obtaining a lnotorial grant from the Archbishop of Canterbury .Do you know where I can get copies of this?

Hi gmauchan,
I noted your interest in the Whitcomb family on RootsChat.I have been tracing the same family through another branch. Charles' parents were Thomas Whitcomb and Sarah Scarlett m. 24 Sep 1785. I have further information about the line that I am happy to share if you are interested.

Hi

Yes I am very interested - happy to swop information - co-incidentally I have been looking at films from Cape Town today and have been copying down details of his children s births and marriages - will have to go back and print them off when the LDS printer is repaired

Hi Gillian,
I can be reached at * We can swap GEDCOM files if that is easy for you. I have traced the line through Harriet Whitcomb, a cousin of Charles, who married John Edwards Hargraves and subsequently emigrated first to NSW then to New Zealand. I have traced some of the ancestral lines back to the 1600's but still doing research to verify this. I also have a fair amount of information about the Whitcomb family in Gosport at the time of Charles and his parents and grandparents.
Cheers
Julia
