Well I have found a tantalizing clue to Sophia Louisa Bestley Reed's parentage. I found a reference in the Naval Chronicle of 1813 about the marriage of Charles Whitcomb to Sophia B Reed eldest Daughter of Joseph Reed Esq RN.

I guess this points to her father being in the Royal Navy - does anyone have any advice as to how I can identify this Joseph Reed - I have searched all the  Naval Chronicles that are available on the American Libraries site but no other references to him appear.

Thanks
Gillian

In case anyone else looks into this family - I finally located Sophia's birth record in London on 21 Jan 1795 - St Mary At Lambeth parents Jospeh and Sarah Reed. Recently publiched on Ancestry.com.

Just an interesting aside.
While researching George Thom, the Scottish Minister, I found he made a payment of £13 to a Mrs Whitcomb in late 1817 or early 1818. What makes me think this is the correct Mrs W is that she was married in Gosport in 1813. Thom had finished at the Seminary in 1812.
If you have an info that may give light to this please let me know.
Best guess is that she either provided a service or was raising funds for a cause.

Hi
Not sure if it is the same Mrs Whitcomb - Sophia and Charles went to the Cape c1815. As Charles was 1 of 9 children and his father was also one of many there were quite a number of Whitcomb's in the area - there is another Whitcombe marriage in Alverstoke in 1813 between a William Whitcombe and Frances Fabian.
