Thomas Bradshaw born c.1801
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 18:28 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my 3rd Great Grandfather Thomas Bradshaw who was aged 40 and living in Bretton with wife Sarah and sons William, James and Henry at the time of the 1841 census. Any details of his marraige or birth would be much appreciated. Its possible he was born in Sesswick, but I'd like confirmation.
Bradshaw:- Chester, Broughton, Hawarden
Taylor:- Chester, Boughton, Lichfield
Williams:- Chester

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

If you check the 1841 image it shows that he was not "born in county" (ie) he was not born in Flintshire

His eldest son was 12yrs old so marriage approx 1827-1829 but marriages for that period do not show fathers names

Its possible he was born in Sesswick,

Do you have access to the 1851 census as that shows his birthplace as Gt Boughton which was mainly in Cheshire but was also the registration district for Bretton

As the 1841 shows him as not born in county, I think he was more likely b Cheshire

His age in 1851 is shown as 63 which is a big difference to 1841.  I've checked the image and it's definitely 63 not 53 which gives a birthyear around 1788

Sarah is a widow by 1861

Clearly his age needs to be checked and I think the only way that can be done is by buying a copy of his death cert

That's were the problem is - there are 2 deaths for a Thomas Bradshaw in the Great Boughton reg district - one in 1853 and the other in 1855.

This is a useful website when his birthyear is more certain

Hi Carole,

Thanks, I hadn't spotted that there was an 'N' in the 'born in county' column. I had spotted the age discrepancy between the 1841 & 1851 censuses - there's also a discrepancy for his son Henry who's shown as 5 in 1841 and 18 in 1851.

The Cheshire BMD site shows the Thomas Bradshaw who died in 1855 as aged 60 and registered at Chester Castle, so its probably the other one which was registered at Hawarden in 1853.

Thanks for the link to cprdb

Regards, Martin

I've also found in the 1861 census a Thomas and Sarah Bradshaw both aged 60 and living in Chester. Thomas is shown as born in Chester and Sarah born in Hawarden. This could tie in with the 1841 census. I'm now confused!
