Goods of Burwarton
« on: Friday 12 February 10 21:27 GMT (UK) »
I would appreciate any further information on the Good family of Burwarton. Sarah Good, born 1714 at Burwarton married into the Harley family. Her father was Richard and her mother was also Sarah.

Thanks,

Alan Harley

Hello Alan,
I have just seen your request. I believe Sarah was the daughter of Richard Goode & Sarah Guy. I think your  Sarah had three surviving brothers, Thomas 1711  ,Richard 1709  & Henry 1717.  (Francis & twin brother ,also Henry died at two days old in 1710 )

Henry had a Daughter Apollonia, (hence my pen name )who married Richards son Henry. Very complicated I know. However Apollonia & Henry are my gr. gr. great grandparents.
Coincidently one of their granddaughters ,Mary Goode married a William Harley in Hope Bowdler in 1868. I do hope this is of some interest to you. Will be pleased to add any more if I Can. Regards .

That is great information, thanks. I think I understand your familial connections - they did "keep it in the family" in Shropshire even up to my childhood in the 50-60's!
As to William Harley I think he may have been married twice, first to my ancestor Mary Bridgman then to a female Goode who was dead by 1881: he has a step-son called Edwin (b.1854 Eaton under Heywood/Ticklerton I surmise). Some years ago when I first got into this I found a Harley who lived to a hundred but the records were very sketchy (pre-internet!) and I thought this may be him.
He certainly lived to a good age and appears to have outlived two wives. His other son Edwin (Harley) kept the Mason's Arms in Ticklerton when the village needed three pubs due to the navvies and activity on Wenlock Edge building the Craven Arms - Wellington railway. This line eventually led my family to Wellington.
Great to receive such information.

I appreciate your help,

Alan Harley

Hello Alan.
Thank you for your reply. I am pleased you found the information helpful.
I believe Sarah's father Richard was born in1681 in Upper Arley Worcs. and his father, also  Richard was born in Trimpley in 1644.
I have a quite interesting clip from the parish records regarding the baptism of Richard Goode in 1681.
I am slightly confused however about the marriage of a Mary Bridgman to William Harley. From my records William was single and  still living at home in 1861. He married Mary Goode (who had two illegitimate children Edwin & Jane) in 1868. Mary died in 1872 aged only38. In 1881 William was living with his stepson Edwin Goode. I thought William died in 1890. However I would appreciate it if you could tell me anything different. I took quite an interest in Mary Goode, it appears , like her father Henry, she was quite a character!!

I think your William Harley was the son of my William Harley. My search for the 100 year old Harley continues. Have more info I will send when I have some time,

Alan Harley
