David John Currie of Cwmavon B1879
« on: Friday 12 February 10 18:55 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to help my neice with her family history. Her late mother's family was Currie-Clatworthy who lived in Abercynnon. I would like to know more of David John Currie born in Cwmavon[Neath] b1879 I believe. David John married Hannah Louise Rees[Penygraig, born]
. Any earlier census of David John's parents would be vry helpful. I wonder if there is a Scottish connection [name Curry change along the way].

My neice's late grandfather was Henry Walter Currie B 1905-d1974[lived Abercynon] He married Joyce Clatworthy B1909--Crediton,Newton St Cyres,Devon.

Thankyou

Hi

As David John was born in 1879 - do you have him with his parents on the 1881 census - no parents names shown above

The 1881 is free to search at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

If you could then post full details we can try and find more info on his parents for you

HI
caroleW is right we need more info.
But have looked
Two births-
David Curry 1st qtr 1879 district Neath vol 11a page 561
David John Curry 4th Qtr 1879 district Neath vol 11a page 515
When you look at the 1881 census I have found borh
RG11 5341/84/5
11 Llantwit Rd Neath
Curry
James  head b 1847 b Neath Tinplate pickler in tin works
MARY  1848
mary E B 1872
Elizabeth J 1876
DAVID aged 2yrs b 1879
children and mother born Neath

Rg11 5337/8/13
67 Tymaen St Lower Michealstone Neath Glamorgan
Henry b 1857 coalminer
Hannah b 1860
David John aged 1yr b 1880
all born Cwmavon Glamorgan

My suggestion is -Do you have the marriage certificate of George b 1905 this will give his fathers name and you can then go backwards on the census to the above.
Havinfg looked at the 1911 census I think David John's son Henry Walter could well have been names after his grandfather Henry Curry b 1857. Names often run in the family.

1901 Census name spelled Currie Rg13/5004/87/30
1891 census Curry Rg12/4459/33/26

1871 census RG10/5425/95/37
David Curry b 1814 Llantwit Cglamorgan coalminer
ann 1815 ?Talabont Llandilo
William son 1853 wheelright
Henry 1857 coalminer
hope this is of help

Thank you. The ties are David John Curry ,Cwmavon and thus his father Henry Curry [not splelt as Currie]. Thus Henry Curry b 1859 is David John's father. Anything on Hannah too. Is there a Scottish connection on the earlier census 1871 and 61.

He is amongst my papers since his father, James Curry, is my wife's Gt, Gt, Gt Grandfather, born 1786 Scotland. I have been tracking Jame's  daughter Catherine, born 1810.

Great to see 2 trees meeting up  ;D

I was just looking up the family on the census and I think that Ann's birthplace in 1871 should be the other way around - Llandeilo Talybont which is in Glamorgan

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/LlandeiloTalybont/index.html

Not that she seems ever so sure about her birthplace.

Hello,

Henry Walter Currie was my great grandfather.  His sister Sylvia researched the Currie/y family history in the 1960's and there was a connection to Scotland (The Outer Hebrides).  I have an original copy of her findings that she typed up for members of the family.    As this is my first posting I am unable to use the PM facility so not sure the best way to get the info to you.

Beth,
Very excited by your post. I had hit a "brickwall" with James Curry b. 1786, Scotland.

If your Gt Gt Aunt Sylvia's findings have James and earlier they are a "must have"! But PMs in either direction are out until you have hit the magic three.

Can you confirm that James is included in the information?

regards

Hi again,

We have James Curry b. 1779 in Benbecula, Outer Hebrides, Scotland and died in 1859 in Neath.  I have Census records and a death certificate that tie in with that date and one of the census state he was born in Scotland.  Also his father James Curry b. 1737 in Benbecula and died in 1812 in Neath.

James b. 1779 had a son David Curry (father of Henry Curry and grandfather of David John Curry/ie) to his mistress Mary Prosser.  Catherine b. 1809/1810 is mentioned - she was one of the children of James and his wife Margaret.

Lots of the names and dates seem to match apart from 1786 - where did that date come from? Would be interesting to know so we can tie things up.

Regards
