Marriage Lookup request
« on: Thursday 11 February 10 18:42 GMT (UK) »
I have found an Ann Allen, widow, age 59, in the 1851 census St. Nicholas, Nottingham living with her unmarried sister Sarah Mounteney from Ruddington.

Can anyone find a marriage between Ann Mounteney and unknown Allen.  Any help will be much appreciated.

Kay

Hi Carole,

There are 3 Ann Allens that I can see on the 1841 census.  There is one in St. Mary's, Nottingham with a Joseph, one in Hucknall Torkard with a George and one in Clareborough with a David.

The most obvious one, I suppose, is Joseph but without a marriage I can't be sure.

Hi

The reason I asked is that I had found a few possibles myself but didn't know whether you knew of any children that would have confirmed an entry

Assuming she gave the correct age in 1851, that would make her 48/49 in 1841 - birthyear around 1792

Ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs so she would show as 45 - birthyear 1796

There is one b 1794 living in Snenton with a John Ackroyd and his daughter

One b 1796 - husband Isaac living in Arnold

One b 1796 living in St Nicholas - head with a possible lodger

Here's hoping somebody can find her marriage for you

Hi Carole,

Thanks for taking the trouble to look for me.  According to parish records, Anne was baptised at Ruddington in 1788, but as we all know, ages given on census returns are often a few years out.

Hi Kay

I noticed in the 1851 census when Ann in living with unmarried sister Sarah Mounteney that there is also a Sarah Mounteney aged 13.

In the 1841 census of St Mary's when Ann is with Joseph there is a child Sarah Mountain aged 3.

Same child??  Maybe worth investigating

Hi Sunflower,

Thanks so much for that.  I must admit I hadn't looked at the original image and am now sure that this must be right Allen family.

What I must do now, apart from finding their marriage, is to see if they had any children.

Thank you, once again, for pointing that out to me.

Hi Kay

I found this burial that may fit in

Joseph Allen buried 1.6. 1844 aged 41 at St Stephens, Snienton.

There is also a Sarah Mounteney aged 39 in the workhouse in the 1841 census which might explain why the daughter Sarah was living with Ann & Joseph Allen.

Hi Sunflower,

Thanks again for finding these things out for me.  Funnily enough I have been looking at the Workhouse records this morning on National Archives and some things seem to fit, but others do not.  The records state that in consequence to the desertion of her husband many years ago while she had a young family, she became chargeable to the parish of Southwell and was sent to the parish workhouse where she remained until the formation of the Union then she was transferred, with one child, to the Union Workhouse where she has continued ever since.  A situation has been recently found for the child who is no longer chargeable.

This seems to fit in with the child, but the records say she was married, (unless she fibbed!!!).

In March 1849 in the records, her age is given as 66.

Also, as in the 1851 Sarah is given as being from Ruddington, would she have been chargeable to the parish of Southwell?

More puzzles to try and solve!!

Thanks once again.

Kay
