I'm using FreeBMD to look between 1900 & 1930 though it could be earlier - but there are so many in Haverfordwest (an educated guess he died there)
Do you want some really bad news. My ancestor having lived and worked on Caldey Island all his working life, retired to Saundersfoot, his death in 1924 was registered in Pontypridd Registration District, he actually died at Aberbeeg Monmouthshire. He and his wife lie buried high up in Tenby Cemetery.
Which goes to show the registration district may only be that of the person registering the death and not where the event happened.

Ah right.  Well as I don't know DOD I don't know how old he was, lol.  It's the one detail I'm missing on 90% of my ancestors and I thought I'd try & tidy up but it's obviously not that easy!

You check which is the last census he is shown on and search the next census for his wife to confirm she was either a widow or had died/remarried.  Both children are young enough to still be at home in 1881

You then search freebmd for the 10yrs between censuses or up to the re-marriage for a death

You also need to consider that Ann may have died and John re-married so you should not confine any census search to a John & Ann Williams

Other considerations are:

Ages at death are only as accurate as the knowledge of the person who reported the death.  If it was somebody who did not have a great personal knowledge - the age may not tie in with what you know

If you cannot find a likely death between 1871-1881 - then perhaps you need to search the 1881 census again

Once you have followed Carolew's recommendations if you are left with just a few dates of burial, then let me have them and I can at least check the 3 established parishes of H'west on your behalf for the burial dates you require.
Of course any burial in H'west registration district can cover an awfull lot of parishes and non-conformist chapel yards, however eliminating the obvious 1st will be a step forward for you.

Well John's alive & well in 1901 age 60.  No more census' recent then that so how would I narrow it down?

Is 1901censusonline the only place to gain access to all the census'?  I don't really want to waste anymore money on that site as I never get value for money (either end up checking the wrong person to rule them out or don't get to use up my credits in 7 days)

Thanks for the help :)

Do you mean 1911 as that is the last online census but it is only available on a pay per view basis

Yes - you would have to see if he was still alive in 1911.  If you are determined to find his date of death then that is the only way you are going to achieve it

Ok thanks.  Guess will have to leave it until I get paid employment again!

Best guess using FreeBMD is;
Deaths Mar 1904
WILLIAMS John 64 Haverfordwest 11a 821 Columbine

Though due to your experience Orillo this could be totally incorrect.  I'd appreciate a look at those records going by the above though if you're able?  Tp rule it out if nothing else.

To ClaireG77.  Came across this site by accident and not sure how to use it yet.  however, I am the youngest son of Victor Hugo Williams born 1896 in Haverfordwest.  I would be interested to know how much information you have.  I've gone back to my grandfather William Benjamin williams and on my mother's side - maiden name Winifred Georgina Tutcher - some considerable info going back 5 generations.
I enclose a photo of Victor taken in Salonika in 1917.
