Peter & Ann Donnelly, Tyrone 1840s

I have records in Scotland of Peter Donnelly, born Tyrone around 1810 who moved to Scotland with his son Bernard, also born in Ireland.  He first appears in Scotland in the 1861 census.  I know from Bernard's marriage records that his mother was Ann, also from Ireland, who had died by 1867.  Ann's maiden name was also Donnelly.  I have traced records via various websites and have located a baptism record for Bernard Donly in Clonfeacle on 5 Nov 1835, mother Ann and father Peter.  RC church, but no name.  However, I cannot find any trace of Ann and Peter's marriage.  Does anyone have any information on this Donnelly line, or suggestions as to how I can trace them further?  I believe they are the right group, but cannot make the link between them in Ireland and Scotland!

I too am chasing Donnelly's .  However my family are from Co. Derry (but very close to the Tyrone border).  I am sure you are being really, really careful but I was just concerned you maybe chasing the wrong Bernard Donly. (We've got Bernard's in our family also).  There are just so many Donnelly's with the same first name and I have almost gone down the wrong path once or twice myself and have had to rein myself back in!  Where my Donnelly's are from there are 3 townlands  that are "back to back" sort of speak and I can't tell you how many  Donnelly's there are within a few miles radius.....and most with the same names who are brothers, uncles, cousins etc. Some of the information I have found out has been through the Griffiths Valuations & Tithe Applotment records and trying to piece together the members of the various families to find the various connections.  Some names have come with a lot of digging. Whew....! But I was 100% certain of the townland to start with.

Perhaps of a bit more help to you. I have been trying to find out the marriage information of my 2x great grandfather Donnelly and was under the assumption that they were married in the local parish church.  However, My 2x great-grandmother appeared on the 1911 Census in England when she was a widow & living with one of her son's - and she listed that she was from Co. Tyrone ( I had always assumed she was a local lass). I am lead to believe that most couples were married in the woman's parish - therefore I am left struggle (probably like you) wondering how do I find my 2xgreat-grandmother's parish in Tyrone! I would suggest that was probably the same situation between Peter & Ann Donnelly - they were probably married from her home parish which may or may not have been where Peter was from.

Thanks for this.  I have also located another family: Peter, Ann and son Bernard in Magherafelt.  This parish has records for the marriage and Bernard's baptism, so still trying to work out which line is the correct one.  Since the Scottish census says Tyrone, it would suggest clonfeacle, but still not sure!  Have been contacted by another person researching the same family, so we have been able to swap some info to piece together the jigsaw a bit better.  Bernard is quite an unusual name, from what I can see.

Bernard subsequently moved to Scotland, and appears on the 1851 census living with his older sister, Sarah, under the mistranscribed name of Doel (Coyle), Sarah's married name.  Peter Donnelly also moved there, by which time Ann appears to have died.  Bernard died young in 1869 of "fever" leaving a wife and young daughter.   If I find any more information, I will post it here so that you can access it.

               I live in Scotland and I too have Donnelly in my family line on my mothers side. This Donnelly family came from Benburb, parish of Clonfeacle, Tyrone and family members are spread round that area, Lurgan, Armagh. They came from the Townland of Derrygoonan, Derryfubble.

Mary Ann Mullen, Father Miles Mullen, mother Ann Donnelly, married my G-G-Grandfather John Reynolds in Calton, Glasgow in 1856.

I visited the Donnelly family in the 1950s and again 3 years ago in Benburb, the family are still there.

I have been looking into my husbands family tree. His 3x Gt Grandparents are John Reynolds and Mary Ann Mullen.  I do not have any further back than this so anyone with any further information I would love to hear from you.

Mosstrooper I see that you have added details on the parents of John Reynolds and I would love to find out more if you have other information you could share.  My husband follows John and Mary Anns daughter Elizabeths line.

    John Reynolds aged 20, residing at Shotts Lanarkshire, married Mary Ann Mullen aged 20, residing at 38, Gallowgate Glasgow, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Calton Glasgow in 1856, neither could read or write and made their mark X.  Best Man was George Mullen, Best Maid was Mary McCafferty. signed with X.
John's father is James Reynolds, mother Mary Kelly
Mary Ann's father is Miles Mullen, mother Ann Donnelly.

I haven't followed their daughters Lizzie & Jane, but their sons, Patrick, James, John, George and Joseph moved out from the Lanarkshire coal field in Shotts into Stirlingshire and West Lothian, following the Coal & Shale Mining jobs, none of them could read or write either having entered the Coal Mining job aged 9 years without ever having been to a school.

In the late 1940s, early 50s I visited regularly my mothers (Jane Reynolds) ancient Granny Mullen still living at 38, Gallowgate with her son Paddy.

Thanks so much for the information.  I am working on direct descendents at the moment doing my own and husbands family so trying not to get confused.  I am sure I will get to following all the siblings at some point.

That's really interesting to know as my husband whilst a student lived in a flat at the Barrowlands so not too far away from where his relatives were.
