Tip: Make sure to check Google Books
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 18:39 GMT (UK) »
When I finally discovered the Google BOOKS tab (yes, you need to click where it says More!!), a whole world opened up. Things appeared that were missed on the basic Google home search. On about page ten of the searches (how sad am I) I suddenly found a Dublin g.g.g. grandmother had been a botanist with a plant named after her - tip when searching for women you need to search for "Mrs Whatever" not just firstname and last name as lots of
references from those days are simply to the married title.

This method also produced another 19th century lady relative from Dublin who had had a book of her verses published - and luckily the whole book was found and
downloadable.
Last but not least, I discovered my naughty g.uncle had written an
autobiography under as assumed name - how obliging of him - filled in all the blanks!

Good luck with your searching - you just don't know what is out there.

Agree Nickie, Google Books can be a fantastic resource for info  :) Have found many useful bits and lost many hours then wandering around the entries - related or not!

Dangerous isn't it?

Under "more" there is also "even more" where you find "news". If you put a name in search then the results page offers different years, including "archives". If you have the sort of people who got in the papers then you may find them there - sometimes in the New Zealand papers which liked to pick up odd news from home.

Thanks to "Gardener" for tip on the Even More tab - NEWS - advanced search - archives - they have newspapers going back a long time, even some obituaries

I like that if you go to the News part and run a search you can then pick out a time period in the left hand column so you're not searching through 200 years worth of items for something from the 1800's.

It's fab!

Maybe I'll get lucky and find the alleged suicide that is rumored to have happened in my family way back when.
