John Charles Proudlock in May 1885 worked at a place called Cobden Exchange  - Would dearly like to know what Cobden Exchange is

John Charles Proudlock was born 07 Nov 1852 in Sunderland and married Sarah Easson 18 Nov 1877 Durham

John Charles Proudlock father was Thomas Proudlock born 1825 Washington Durham and his mother was Mary Lishman born Monkwearmouth Durham

Hopefully Cobden Exchange is in around the Sunderland area

Thanks in advance

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat :)

Yes it seems it was in Sunderland by this link but unfortunately mentioned in a fire 27th August 1904, second picture on the link. Not sure what it was though, it was on High Street West.

Cobden Exchange was rebuilt after the fire of 1904 and survived until the 1980s.  It was located in High Street West on the corner of Gill Bridge Avenue, next to the Rose & Crown PH.  Kennedy's shop was in the Cobden Building and in its later years was extendedto include Nos. 42-47.
