Cooper family Bray County Dublin

Hi

I hope someone can help.  My great grandfather was Joseph Cooper from Bray, County Dublin and his father (according to the parish register on Joseph's marriage entry) was Frank Cooper a hostler from Bray.  I'm not sure whether hostler means inn keeper or a stable lad at an inn, probably the latter.  Has anyone any suggestions about how I would go about getting more information.  I would be so grateful.  I would love to get to Bray but it will probably be a couple of years before I will be able to do this, so any hints would be wonderful.

Bray is actually in Co. Wicklow, and the section in Co. Dublin known as  'Little Bray'

approx what year was Frank Cooper a hostler ?

I'll have a look in the directories to see in there's any sign of him... if he ran an inn/hotel he should be listed

Hi Shane

Thank you for replying.   My GGrandfather was married in Feb 1876 but whether the statement about his father implies he was still living I wouldn't know.  I assume that it must be Little Bray as Joseph varied between saying he came from Dublin or Bray on different census entries.  Don't know if this helps.  Thank you so much for the response.  Joseph himself was a mariner and came to the Isle of Man where he met and married my grandmother.

Griffiths Valuation (carried out around 1850) shows two Coopers as Heads of Households in Little Bray and ironically, both listed as Dublin:-
Cooper Francis, Little Bray, Oldconnaught, Dublin
Cooper George, Little Bray Lane leading to Chapel, Oldconnaught Dublin

 ... I have not found anything promising in the directories. There are a few Inns/Taverns in the Little Bray area but I have not found any Coopers

Hi

I was in Bray this afternoon and took a stroll up Chapel Lane.  Yes, there is an old pub on the corner, but also, if your ancestor worked with horses, he may have been employed in nearby Kilruddery Estate, home of the Brabazons (Lord Meath). This estate is at the southern end of Bray, not far from where your ancestors lived.
