My Grandad and Grt Grandad's occupation

I have found information on my grt grandfather (William Earl who was born in Ireland and his occupation was a Sugar Boiler, he then went to Scotland where my grandfather (William George Earl) was then born, on the census he by this time had moved to Salford in Manchester and his occupation is shown as a Brattine Cloth Maker, would anyone be able to tell me what these jobs were.

A sugar boiler, refined sugar by heating liquor in a vacuum pan with steam  to produce crystallised sugar

Annie, I think this should be Brattice Cloth, a Brattice was a partition in a pit made of timber/cloth as part of the air circulation system. Presumably the cloth had to be strong & fireproof!...Skoosh.

Interestingly Tate of Tate & Lyle moved his sugar making plant from Scotland to Plaistow East London I wonder if your GG/d was employed by him

Hi Stan, Skoosh and Indaloman and thanks for your info, very interesting and all fits in, especially Tate and Lyle in Greenoch as that was the birth place of my Grandad so his Dad must have come over from Ireland and worked in the Sugarhouse......this is facinating and also stopping me working, ha! 

The Brattice Cloth maker is another lovely piece of news as I can now build up a picture.

Here's a website about Sugar Makers and Boilers,a very hard and hot job.
Lots of Germans seem to have come across to London to do this in the mid 1800's.
