Christchurch records
« on: Monday 08 February 10 11:31 GMT (UK) »
Are there any church records for Christchurch pre 1837 available on the web please, not counting IGI and Knightroots? My ancestors moved from Dorset which is particularly well covered to Christchurch. I have my ggggrandfather's birth on IGI but both Ancestry and Genes Reunited have trees with his name all with differing siblings and parents. Any help appreciated.

Not that I have found yet.

Would you like to tell us who or what you are looking for and perhaps someone may be able to assist.

He is James Gillingham 1780-1847, a stonemason and builder. He married Mary Ann Waterman on 14/8/1804 at East Stratton. I'm fine with his line downwards, but it's his siblings and parents I'm stuck on. I know his father was William from the IGI and that James was born in Christchurch. I had his siblings down as Mary 1776 and Moses 1878 and his parents as William 1752 and Sarah Manuel 1758 all from Swanage, but looking at other peoples' trees has made me doubt......  Unfortunately there were several William Gillinghams that would fit. The Gillingham name is very important to our family. 6 members have it as a second Christian name to my knowledge, as recently as an uncle and a cousin.

I saw the James Gillingham 27/3/1780 baptism on IGI with father William, but it is not an extracted date only submitted, which is not to be trusted. Extracted info is taken direct from the original record, whereas submitted is not.

Hi Eileen,

These baptisms are from the Priory Church records, all the children of William GILLINGHAM (at that time the mother's name is not given unless the child is illegitimate)

Dinah 4 Jan 1764
Susannah 5 Aug 1767
John 26 May 1773
Salley 5 Jun 1775
Jinney 6 Mar 1778
William 27 mar 1780

I can't see a Mary or a Moses.

There is a marriage of a William GILLINGHAM to Betty BUDGEN 15 Feb 1763

I don't know if this helps you,?

Wow! thanks Jebber. These are records I really didn't expect. Mary, Moses and the parents were on the Swanage Dorset OPC website. Is Priory Church in Christchurch? You've put William for the date I have for James. Eileen

Sorry, I meant James, I was reading from my print out which said James son of William. I should have checked my message more carefully before posting it.

The Priory Church is the heart of Christchurch, it is the longest Parish Church in England.
