another ancestry problem
« on: Sunday 07 February 10 22:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
Just tried to download a census image on my Windows 7 64 bit. PC.
Although Ancestry has downloaded it IE8 hasn't grabbed it.I've tried turning off protected mode & ran a search in case it went somewhere else.Works fine with Firefox,IE8 appears to be blocking it although it says it isn't.
Any advise?

If none of the solutions work from threads on here, maybe a workround for now to save having to keep dragging etc,
IF you have a memory stick save straight to there, or make a folder on your memory stick ie census downloads, then make a shortcut from that folder and drag it to your desktop, then save images to that shortcut,
of course the pain is the memory stick has to be in all the time your d/l, or you want to access the cenus, (unless you move the census you have d/l to somewhere else when you have finished)
of course you can put the shortcut anywhere you want, not perfect but better than having to keep hunting ;)

Hi Jim

Les is right re the solution.
I had the same problem with my new pc - windows 7 IE8.
Ancestry advised it is a known problem but gave no suggestion of when/if it would be resolved.

regards,

I telephoned Ancestry as I had the same problem, they said they are not compatible with IE8, this was some months ago.  They suggested I use Firefox which I did and it works.

I must say Firefox is much better than IE8 too

Hello Mothball
Yes I had it Ok on Firefox but there's a couple of niggles I have with it so I've gone back to IE8.
Next time around I might drop Ancestry in favour of FindMyPast.

Hello Jim

I recognise you from posts you have helped me in the past.

Can I just mention that Firefox has just released a new version/update and is working better than before.  I find I can access and download all I want on Ancestry.

Am not that technical, but am sure you can have the use the use of two browsers on your computer.

You could just have Firefox to access all of Ancestry until they and IE8 get it together.   Sorry, I'm not a rep honest guv!

Best Wishes

Steven

Yes, you are correct, you can have 2 or more browsers on your PC & you can have both IE & Firefox running at the same time.

Jim have just realised when i tried d/l a file using Ancestry i was using opera,
for you try right mouse clicking on your IE icon and then run as Administrator,
then try a census page again hopefully will cure your problem ;)
