Did he marry Caroline after 1837?  If so - a copy of their marriage cert will give his fathers name and occupation

Yes they are there in 1841 HO107 £ Fo 26 P 2
it looks like William the father has died and the three children are with their mother she is given as 50 which means she was born between1786 and 1791 (the 1841 census was rounded)
Caroline's brother was a Watchmaker so look in trade directories for him they are still in St Chad Shrewsbury
have to go now hope this gives you a start
